Eric, it's ok for all you short hitters who can't reach even Par 4s in two, course management is not a problem, you all have to lay up anyway :-)

EWRobson - 11 May 2006 23:13 - 330 of 505

pth: So presumably you will give me two to one against me outdriving you at the longest drive hole? We should have our own little flag - of course you have to be on the fairway. What are the odds against you being on the fairway?

markusantonius - 12 May 2006 12:55 - 331 of 505

Course is looking (and playing!) immaculate ATM and the greens are now being cut 1mm lower c.t. previous years. Hence more emphasis on a "total game package" being required to win "The 5th. Major" in June, I think...

ptholden - 12 May 2006 16:31 - 332 of 505

Eric

Sounds like a reasonable bet, particularly as you have to get over a pond and a hoofin great tree before you even get to the fairway. No laying up on this one 150 yds!!

BTW. Exact handicap now 15.9 following Wednesday's Medal.

Everyone, please keep me updated re: exact handicaps, in the run up to: "THE FIFTH MAJOR!". Thanks.

PTH, The middle of the 3 big trees was cut down last year succumbing to members' requests - far too difficult for even above-average hitters to carry, played off White Tees into a breeze (or more). So Eric, that could indeed be a reasonable bet, after all, sir?

BROCK123 - 12 May 2006 21:38 - 335 of 505

My handicap is 19.5 on a good day. I have only broken 90 once in my life, but I have 2 holes in one( 5 points with a stroke). 1st was a 5 iron, second was a 7 wood on the same hole (Par 3 - 160 yards), eleven years apart. I play at Brampton Park GC - Huntingdon Cambs. This hole is now designated as a pare 2'

This hole has now been designated a par 2!

BROCK123 - 12 May 2006 21:47 - 336 of 505

Further to my previous message. I have intesting situation concerning Brampton Park GC.

It was originally owned by a limited Company called Portedge Ltd. This went bust in 1995. Consequently it was bought via a members who subscribed as share holdersto Stonecheck PLc who now own the golf club. This was a 10 year plan
whereby share holders bought shares over a ten year period and were granted extremely extremely favourable annual subscriptions.

This plan end in 2007. Then the whole plan has to be re-thought next year.

EWRobson - 12 May 2006 21:47 - 337 of 505

By gum, Brock. Wonder how long the nearest the pin hole is. Not quite sure whether a hole in one isn't too near! After all, if you are in the hole you can't be near the hole, can you? Wonder if marcus has this covered?

pth: Take it that bet is taken: I win 10, you win 5; just to avoid any doubt. By the way, trees aren't a problem - I work on assumption that tree is 90% air and just go through them.

Eric

BROCK123 - 12 May 2006 21:54 - 338 of 505

Further to my previous message

Many of the original share holders , approx 40% (who were golfers) have now either died, moved away or do not play golf.
Hence they are only interested in a return of thier original shareholding (4700 per person).
The interesting thing now,is, that the club now has approx 8 acres of redundant land which is suitable for prime residential use - subject to planning permission.

How much is that worth?! Continued

BROCK123 - 12 May 2006 22:05 - 339 of 505

Some of the 'departed' share holders have expressed an interest in selling thier
shares.

The shares were originally issued at 1. Some have been sold at a premium of up 1.10.

I have bought additional shares at 75p.

There is a little bit more detail than I have given, but it could be an interesting opportunity for shrewd investors like yourselves.

Other than my own personal share holding( and 2 holes in one) I have no official connection with Stonecheck plc who own Brampton Park GC.

I would be interested in your views on this ' opportunity'.

BROCK123 - 12 May 2006 22:11 - 340 of 505

Eric

Having a hole in one does create problems.

For instance every week we enter in a '2s' competition.

Does a hole in one count as 2 2s or no 2s.

They finally compromised and said the 2s competition was a 2 or better.

It just ins't fair.

EWRobson - 12 May 2006 22:20 - 341 of 505

Brock: interesting. Huntingdon seems an attractive area, close to Cambridge and thus prime area for residential development. A developer should buy up at a reasonable premium given that they are typically prepared to hold for a longish period. Not clear why original plan was for only 10 years and what options are open in 2007. The problem with an ageing membership is that they are typically not prepared to look ahead. The shares are so widely spread out that there is not the financial motivation to exploit the situation. An alternative might be to find a company that already has golf course investments to buy out the shareholders at a premium - particularly if you can get a competition going. I ss the trend in the US and Spain to residential proeprties flanking a golf course being increasingly significant over here.

Hope that helps; it might at least get some commentary going.

EWRobson - 12 May 2006 22:24 - 342 of 505

So you were really out of pocket with a huge round of drinks minus only one box of balls to offset for your '2'. lol! But thank your lucky stars you weren't in Scotland. Pal had a one at Elie, Fife and clubhouse was thankfully empty when we got back in. Within five minutes the clubhouse was packed as the news brought everyone from a packed meeting downstairs and I suspect all the residents of the local community! Their wee dram were 1/4s rather than 1/6ths of course.

Fundamentalist - 12 May 2006 23:44 - 343 of 505

Brock

at our course a hole in 1 counts as 4 2s in the sweep - you got diddled mate

markusantonius - 13 May 2006 00:37 - 344 of 505

= 2 x Twos where I played: confirmed as the only time I have ever got a hole-in-one in a Comp. Magical moment though, never to be forgotten (was a poor undergraduate at the time!).

Brock, our M-AM NTP hole at HL will be the 9th. Hole which is 144 yards off yellow (160 off White) so you should be OK. Interesting read re: your own Club. Tend to agree with Eric in that frontline property throughout Europe is prime spot ATM. BTW have you booked in at the Club Hotel yet? I have received your entry fee cheque, thanks.

I rather fortunately had a hole in one a few years ago on the last day of the Ryder cup so dont need to tell you the club house was full !
Well worth the cost of these drinks as I had serious doubts it would ever happen.

fliper - 13 May 2006 17:59 - 346 of 505

My first hole in one came after 25 years of golf.

markusantonius - 14 May 2006 12:32 - 347 of 505

Reminder: deadline for additional entries expires at 00:00-Midnight tonight (i.e. Online indication), 14 May (chq received = absolutely no later than: 19 May).

Another 2 entrants would make my prefered total of 12 (easily divsible for a.m. 4-balls and p.m. 3-balls) so any last-minute applications would be more than welcomed here...?

Everyone, please keep me updated re: exact handicaps, in the run up to: "THE FIFTH MAJOR!". Thanks.
