Referendum : to be in Europe or not to be ?, that is the question ! (REF)

required field - 03 Feb 2016 10:00

Thought I'd start a new thread as this is going to be a major talking point this year...have not made up my mind yet...(unlike bucksfizz)....but thinking of voting for an exit as Europe is not doing Britain any good at all it seems....

hangon - 23 Jun 2016 18:08 - 3295 of 12628

FWIW I think many public Figures" - who have been postulating opinions as facts will be liable to much scrutiny. Those that have over-egged will be remembered and may fall from grace - whichever side wins . . . . . and the VOTE isn't necessarily the last Word - (( For example if GB "remains in" we may find that 1),The EU will not tolerate any previously "won" exceptions.... and-or 2),Other countries may leave the EU as a result of the massive "Stirring the stinking pot" ( My words!) - so, this might lead us to discover we are left having to prop-up the "disadvantaged countries" that the EU has/Will soon allow to join.)).

Certainly this is going to be entertaining - whichever way.

I have been saddened that the "Leave" campaign hasn't had a sensible leader - N.Farrge was pushed aside IMHO for "Political reasons" - perhaps others thought he was likely to upset the many immigrants, including many already in the House of Commons. Whilst Boris has experience, we have experience of him and I don't recall him being especially excited about the Prospects for GB-alone.
M.Gove has come from some obscurity to a huge asset - but amongst the Leavers I don't find anyone with forward vision . . . . but then it's rather too early perhaps . . . IMHO. We need someone that won't spend eye-watering amounts on vanity-projects like HS2 ( I saw in June 2016 - that Chiltern Railways offers London-Birmingham @ £6 single-fare . . . So, unless that's scheduled for Midnight-only; it looks like HS2 has a finance issue on its hands ).

If the Remain wins, they will have to hope that nothing bad befalls the EU for the Next Generation . . . let's face it that really is scary. I just cannot understand why D.Cameron promised a Ref..... ( to blunt the UKIP voters?) . . . and we've yet to unwind the fiasco of Tory Electoral Expenses - why wasn't that resolved prior to the Ref?
Haystack . . Thanks . . your considered Reply put flesh on the bones of what I wrote. For DC is was a massive underestimate - I suspect he expected the LiberalD MPs would be similar to the previous Election . . . it was surprising how the "School-Fees" scenario poisoned the LibD prospects . . . I thought they had behaved Honourably and really needed to demonstrate they had Ministerial potential . . . It tells me "NEVER" promise anything without a let-out option . . .

You have to realise that Farage is hated by Labour. He would have been a terrible leader for Leave as it would have alienated the Labour supporters that wanted to leave. I voted Leaved and as a Conservative I hate him as well. Cameron gave a referendum for many reasons. There had been a Eurosceptic part of the Conservative party for years. The referendum was a method of healing that sore. Cameron thought the same techniques that were used in the Scottish referendum could be used. Cameron didn't think he would get a clear majority and that the Labour vote would collapse so totally in Scotland. It was also a way to stop UKIP getting too strong by nullifying their call for a vote to leave.

MaxK - 23 Jun 2016 18:28 - 3297 of 12628

Is there any indication of turnout yet?

Haystack - 23 Jun 2016 18:33 - 3298 of 12628

There will be no exit polls. The turnout won't be able to be calculated until all polls have closed and the boxes have been sent to the counting centres. Then the totals per polling station will be added up at the centre and reported to the central control. When all the counting centres have reported they will have turnout. It could take quite a time.

MaxK - 23 Jun 2016 18:42 - 3299 of 12628

Thanks.

But what I meant was there any indicators of raw numbers, not what they voted for.

ie, busy, brisk, slow, dead.

Haystack - 23 Jun 2016 18:56 - 3300 of 12628

That is for the raw numbers. What they voted for will be maybe 2am onwards and a final result in the morning.

2517GEORGE - 23 Jun 2016 19:03 - 3301 of 12628

We've just voted, long queue's in each station so looks like highish turnout.

Fred1new - 23 Jun 2016 19:31 - 3302 of 12628

How many times did you vote?

grannyboy - 23 Jun 2016 19:45 - 3303 of 12628

Cameron didn't believe that he'd get a majority when he said he'd hold
a referendum, and was expecting another coalition government, and in
the process saving his skin having to have one, but the final results put
the kibbosh on that plan, because he thought the Libdems would have the
referendum promise annulled if they wanted their support.

Camerons a snake oil salesman, always has been always will be, and it
shows your(Haystacks) judgement when he says he dosn't like Nigel Farage
when its Nigel Farage who tells it like it is...

Its a fact that that upsets some people..Those who lack any kind of judgement
in a persons character, as in their choice with sycophanting about cameron!!..

grannyboy - 23 Jun 2016 19:48 - 3304 of 12628

As to been hated by Labour(party), who's bothered about that?, but there
has been plenty of past Labour voters coming over to UKIP..

2517GEORGE - 23 Jun 2016 20:29 - 3305 of 12628

Fred it's not changed over the years it's still one man one vote which explains why you don't vote.

Dil - 23 Jun 2016 20:36 - 3306 of 12628

Jeremy Corbyn is hated by just as many Labour voters as Farage imo.

cynic - 23 Jun 2016 20:37 - 3307 of 12628

how can one hate corbyn?
he's just a non-event

2517GEORGE - 23 Jun 2016 20:38 - 3308 of 12628

A high %age of remainiacs are rich luvvies and big business who have no idea about life for the average person.
Whatever the result is tomorrow we shall all have to accept it, should it be LEAVE then I expect a huge sell off in stocks and the pound which will hit our pockets for a time, but there is a much bigger picture then monetary value (unless you are a remainiac) at stake here.

Dil - 23 Jun 2016 20:38 - 3309 of 12628

Family voted out , the one rogue who was going to vote Remain is back packing round the U.S. and I did have to threaten my youngest one :-)

cynic - 23 Jun 2016 21:01 - 3310 of 12628

2517GEORGE - 23 Jun 2016 21:05 - 3311 of 12628

They don't know we're LEAVING?
2517

MaxK - 23 Jun 2016 21:07 - 3312 of 12628

Vote remain, all the best people are...

Haystack - 23 Jun 2016 21:32 - 3313 of 12628

I have had about 8 emails from the Leave campaign reminding me to vote. Just had one from Boris asking for a last push.

cynic - 23 Jun 2016 21:38 - 3314 of 12628

DAX now +110 and FTSE +45 albeit with that naughty 20 point spread
