Tip Update: nerve needed at Superscape

Superscape could have done without having to publish its interim results today showing minimal revenues, and a placing to raise 10 million may worry investors, but the fruits of a number of big deals should start to flow through soon.

Turnover for the six months to July was just 94,000 down from 510,000 last year with losses down 26% to 3.7 million.

However virtually none of last year's revenues were from the wireless business, which is now Superscape's only focus, and where the big deals of the last few months have come from.

Chief executive Kevin Roberts told Citywire that the City was expecting the first half numbers. House broker Evolution Beeson Gregory is looking for full-year revenues of 1.5 million, nearly all of which will come in the final quarter of the year. For next year this rises to 4.5 million, and much of this is underpinned by the recent deals with the likes of Sony, Motorola, Siemens and Disney (see related articles).

The company is raising 9.3 million net of expenses through a placing of 27,118,644 new shares and placing and open offer of 6,892,058 shares at 29.5p.

Roberts said this was to exploit the 'outstanding' opportunities the company now has to do content deals, rather than because it needed the cash to keep going. He said the company had at least 18 months of cash to keep going, but the number of opportunities coming its way now required extra cash to help Superscape deliver on these deals.

In the next 90 days, Roberts reckons there will be further announcements to come with 'high level' intellectual property owners, with whom Superscape does deals for the rights to develop 3D mobile games based on their characters or content. There will also be more technology deals with major players.

Through its relationship with ARM, which has already invested in the company and which is re-investing in this round, and with the major handset players and content owners, Superscape is also talking to all of the major mobile operators.

The company has potential revenue streams coming in from a number of areas, including providing tools to games developers, where it takes a royalty on games developed. It also co-publishes games, as with its deal with Sony, in which it takes the lion’s share of the royalties.

‘The cash register is always ringing for Superscape,’ Roberts said, which will be good news for investors who have so far seen little evidence of any cash registering at all.

Citywire Verdict:
Shares (SPS) are up 0.5p at 33p.We tipped them more than a year ago at 21p, and have advised hanging on in there ever since. The shares have been as high as 40p, but I still think the company has yet to really show what it can do, and this is not now the time to bail out.ENDS.

Well that will do me, take note of the new deals etc over the next 90 days, a price pusher if I ever saw one. Not the time to bail out, more like the time to wade in I would say.

cheers GF.

SUPERSCAPE GROUP PLC

SUPERSCAPE FIRST TO MARKET FOLLOWING RATIFICATION OF NEW JAVA STANDARD FOR 3D ON MOBILE PHONES

Superscape Group plc (LSE: SPS) announces that following the official ratification today by the Java Standards Community of JSR 184 to be known as the Mobile 3D Graphics API the companys Swerve technology is the worlds first commercially available implementation of this standard for delivering rich media 3D on mobile devices.

The new award winning Mobile 3D Graphics API standard is the result of more than a years development work by a highly experienced Expert Group of the Java community. Superscape was a founder member of this Group, which also included Nokia, Vodafone, Siemens, ARM, Sony Ericcson and Motorola. Having been intimately involved in every aspect of the development of this new global standard, Superscape has been ideally placed to develop a standards-compliant 3D engine, authoring tools and associated content branded as Swerve.

Superscapes Swerve software has been developed in close collaboration with ARM. Swerve Client (the engine) has been optimised to run on a single ARM 9 (or above) processor and can also use any available hardware acceleration on the handset using OpenGL ES. It provides an elegant and cost-effective means of delivering console quality, high performance 3D applications, including games, on mass-market mobile phones. Swerve Studio (the authoring tool) is a fully compliant development environment for creating console quality interactive 3D applications for wireless devices. It is based on the industry-standard design software, 3D Studio Max.

Recent agreements with Siemens, Samsung and Motorola, as well as a number of major content and brand organisations, including Sony, have provided strong endorsement of the leading position of Superscapes Swerve technology in the global mobile marketplace.

Kevin Roberts, CEO, Superscape Group plc said: The final ratification of this standard represents a significant milestone for Superscape and the culmination of many months of highly focused development work together with other key players in the Java community. The new standard to which our Swerve technology has been designed to be fully compliant will enable the over the air (OTA) delivery of console quality Java games, a sector that is predicted to account for 88.3 per cent of total mobile game sales of just below $7 billion in Europe in 2006.
