The FTSE 100 index is set to slide after a weak end to last week on Wall Street amid concerns over recent gains. In Asia, Japanese shares fell to two-week lows on Monday. Banks were among the hardest hit so watch out for HSBC & STAN

The company also said Chairman Colin Marshall would retire in July next year and would be succeeded by Martin Broughton, currently chairman of British American Tobacco.Astra Zeneca could rise from results of trials on its experimental anti-coagulant Exanta. Alvis The Ministry of Defence has contacted a handful of contractors about taking over a six-billion-pound programme to supply it with armoured vehicles, in what would be a blow to Alvis Nokia, is considering a takeover of UK firm Psion in a bid to dominate the cellphone software market Barclays bank has held exploratory talks with three banks in the United States for a possible acquisition of Pennsylvania-based Sovereign, New York-based North Fork Bancorporation, and GreenPoint Financial Corp.

I have to admit to purchasing a small amount of STAN @ 9.60 earlier as I'd been meaning to for ages, but only now got round to it!

stockbunny - 10 Nov 2003 15:45 - 34 of 50

Hope it does well for you - agreed it has been tempting this year
earlier it was under 700p I think remembering back, its done well!

Melnibone - 10 Nov 2003 15:50 - 35 of 50

FTSE seems to be trying to bottom out at what was last
weeks resistance level before we got the Friday bounce.
Check the 5day tab on the ftse chart at top of thread.

Taken a small position in MKS. It's just above short term 280p support
and we may get a little bounce. Not too bothered if it drops, I'll
treat this one as a position rather than a day trade and hedge if
required by shorting the FTSE if we start to get the drop suggested
by Croc.

Just scalped the dow with a short and modest gain of 200.
Not much legroom to swing a cat -need volatility.

good luck everybody

Had this one (VRD) forever (still have a certificate) Normally does very little, but creaps up, and occationally down. But today seems to be bucking the trend.

VRD results due on on 18 Nov, but expected to be in line with expectations. I think my div return is now about 20% per annum, so not tempted to sell.

little woman - 10 Nov 2003 19:00 - 40 of 50

So zarif,

I see you don't think the dow will hit anywhere near the 10,000 mark by christmas!

Personally I must admit the US would be asking for trouble if it did, but then when did anyone born in the US believe they were infallibe!

zarif - 10 Nov 2003 19:07 - 41 of 50

Little woman:
Everytime we hear all these things -its sods law that it goes pear shape.
Even with all the good news etc last week it nose dived on friday. Many times its the market "pimps" who blast out all these things and gather a herd for slaughter.
Most probably i am all wrong but time will tell.

Melnibone - 10 Nov 2003 19:10 - 42 of 50

Ref the DOW hitting 10000, this is not impossible.

Same as Croc, I think we are overdue a correction, but I think
that it would be a little odd, when having come this near, that the
DOW and the FTSE didn't at least make an attempt on 10000/4450
respectively.

It may be just the frothy blow-off that we need to precipitate
a big fall when everyone comes to the conclusion that this
leg has ended when they try and fail to take the resistances out.
Assuming they do fail of course. ;-)

zarif - 10 Nov 2003 19:13 - 43 of 50

Melnibone -Quite correct in your logic. I reckon it will trace to around say 9700-9710 then go with gusto for 10000-11500 -in near future than before xmas -if it reaches that far in time spiral down. -But then what do i know -not much

David,

Thank for puting up this page. Great information in one view, particularly coming event, news next to market indiz very helpful

Only one question of you could update the part of IC and SM ad put a date next to it. hopefully it is possible.

Keep up the good work, thanks

ntk98 - 17 Nov 2003 12:54 - 48 of 50

Regarding you invitation to join the pattern, TA, elliot wave formation etc .. I am not qualified in TA, but I dare to propose the first attack, from the commensence none of them works, neither fundamentalist nor TA analyst is correct

Hope it interesting enough target point for those who are reluctant to join. Only specialised on one of that field even when you could make a Phd on that stuff, you will see your pocket soon empty and u better regret for not staying in writing programs, writing fundamental tips and literature which will be more profitable.

I stress again NEITHER Fundamental NOR technical analysis is right.

zarif - 17 Nov 2003 12:58 - 49 of 50

ntk98:
You are posting on a week old thread. The updated thread is on todays date.I hope u get my drift otherwise there will be the o/dated thread and current thread both going on at same time -which defeats the point somehow
