Did start to play golf in the very late 70's but work and other sports prevented me playing more then I would have liked and I haven't gone back to it but may do later in life. My 1st actual experience on an 18 holer was to go on a weeks golf clinic with Dai Rees near Dublin (Based at Bray and Woodbrook GC), A really enjoyable time I had as well, think that DR was a member of south hearts GC or somewhere in Herts. We played a number of courses as well as Woodbrook. I joined Hawstead when I got back for a season or two.

i didn't know dai rees was still alive in the late 70s .... i was lucky enough to meet him once, though i don't exactly recollect it though i do know where it was

rather annoying ... i'm sure i had a golf book signed by dai rees, but at best, i seem to have misplaced it .... however, i do have a box of brand new warwicks still in original wraooers and box!

indeed; warwicks are of the era prior to the universal 1.68" diameter ... in those days, uk golf balls were 1.62"

Oh really, so does that mean that the newer bigger balls run slightly slower and therefore better to control when in the air?

it was rather the opposite ..... the americans introduced the 1.68" ball, but at the time, it was felt that this new size was too prone to influence by the wind and thus unsuitable for uk (links) conditions

in (comparatively) recent years, technology and lab testing has developed the way dimples are scattered over the ball as well as their profile

at least as large an influence has been the development of ball coverings and indeed the whole structure of it.

you will have noticed that golf balls now only get cut by the mower, whereas in the days of real balata, a thinned shot would put a big "smile" on the ball

Interesting thanks, I always preferred the shorter/putting aspect of the game myself, so preferred pitch & putt to be honest. Didn't like Links golf as to fast and could be windy being near the coast. More skills needed of course, but my view is that all the sport that I play has to be relaxing and enjoyable as well as testing my own level of skill.
