Hi all
A friend of mine has a HP Athlon 1500 latop that when trying to boot up comes up with the error: AMD ATHLON CHECKING NVRAM. he took to a computer shop and they recommended changing the graphics card - he has now fitted this and still gets the same error.
Can any of you tell me what this error means and what may the likely cause/remedy?
Many thanks in advance

I've been trying to get my pc to run in safe mode by pressing F8 when restarting, having disabled 'system restore' in order to do a scan/clean - but it ain't working. Where else do I find safe mode please? WIndows ME - but not for much longer :S
Edit: Think I'm in big T too - when I realised I couldn't find safe mode I tried to re-enable the system restore setting - 4 times now - and it's still disabled.

Cheers Stormie
Phew! Dunno how, but re-enabled again now.
Ok - did a trend micro scan earlier which recommended the system restore/safe mode thingie before I re-scanned the machine for a trojan 194.A lurking in file C:\explorer.cab*explorer.exe*.
"Solution
Additional Windows ME/XP Cleaning Instructions
Users running Windows ME and XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected systems.
Windows Millennium Edition (ME) and Windows XP have a feature known as System Restore, which creates backups of certain files in the _Restore folder. The System Restore feature usually backs up files with EXE or COM extensions, which may include infected files and malware programs. Files in the _Restore folder are protected and can only be accessed using System Restore. This feature must be disabled first before Trend Micro antivirus can access and clean these files.
The following procedure disables the System Restore feature:
For Windows ME
Right-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click Properties.
Click the Performance tab.
Click the File System button.
Click the Troubleshooting tab.
Select Disable System Restore.
Click Apply > Close > Close.
When prompted to restart, click Yes.
Press F8 while the system restarts.
Choose Safe Mode then hit the Enter key.
After your system has restarted, continue with the scan/clean process. Files under the _Restore folder can now be deleted.
Re-enable System Restore by clearing Disable System Restore and restarting your system normally."
Well I can't do that - safe mode won't let me connect to the internet.
Flummoxed now.

Might be a stupid question but does Windows XP still have a clipboard?
I'm trying to print a screen shot to the clipboard but I can't find it????

Try Start/Run C:\WINDOWS\system32\clipbrd.exe
I don't think you can print directly from the clipboard

You don't need to access the clipboard necessarily Harlosh, just open any graphics program (even Paint) and paste.
This is a very good and popular file viewing program:

OK it looks as though it might just be failing the memory check. If there are two memory cards, remove each in turn to see whether one is causing it to fail the check. It could also be the CPU or motherboard though. No way to know really without swapping memory cards to start with, with good ones from another laptop if necessary.

You could also try resetting the BIOS parameters to the factory defaults. Just guessing as I don't know Athlons.

Fundy, that HP problem could be nasty which is probably why not much has been posted. It sounds like a probably hardware fault to me.
I would open the box and pull all the cards (except Graphics) then restart and see what happens, if its OK put the cards back in one at a time and reboot until you find where the problem is. If it fails with no cards then remove the memory sticks and try booting with each one in turn.
If the motherboard has inbuilt graphics and a separate graphics card you could remove the graphics card as weiil in step 1 above as long as you make sure you have switched graphics to the onboard adapter first.

I need advice on a quick back up system to my office computer as we are running
an internet based data base and we are going to be charged for every 200mb at 25 per month and that appears to be like throwing coins into a whishig well.
And does anyone know if the 10 pc in the office can be covered under one anti virous licence or do they have to carry on paying 29 pa to Norton.
I just use avg and zone labs on my lap top as advised by spaceman.
