The NAO suggested that the DWP was reluctant to admit problems with Universal Credit, accusing the department of having a “fortress mentality”.

The computer system used to run Universal Credit cannot cope with the “complicated” lives of thousands of benefits claimants, officials have admitted.


Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, was forced to deny that the Coalition’s flagship welfare reform is a “debacle” despite officials conceding that the IT system was unable to cope with couples and families.


Mr Duncan Smith was speaking after he told MPs that more than £40 million spent on IT for the project had already been written off.


He also admitted that a further £91 million of software would effectively be defunct within the next five years as Universal Credit moves to a digital system.


Mr Duncan Smith has faced growing criticism over the project, which has been beset by rising costs and delays.

The system will get there in the end. There is no great rush to have it finished.

There is a rush to finish, the costs keep getting ever higher.

The real truth is, no one is in charge, and ids does not understand the task.

The sums of money involved are not significant.

Carney just said that there was 'potential' for a bubble.

The withdrawal of special funds for borrowing was to apply those funds to business lending.

A dangerous situation is building up Hays. Carney is right to warn and act.

thanks sticky .... some rather contradictory views on there, but i thought the following interesting .... the forecasts suggest that lending will still fall a long way short of the boom years.

so in conclusion, is a bubble imminent? ..... probably not, but carney is quite right to flag that he is paying attention lest one materialises ..... at the very least, it gives confidence to the public at large that he has his hand on the tiller, and is on the ball .... thought you'ld enjoy the scrambled metaphor!
