THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

certainly that particular school did not especially suit me nor me it, but that was more than 50 years ago ......

on the other hand, my 2 sons went to a different school, but also boarded (my daughter did not), and i have nothing but the highest praise for that establishment ..... both are very different in all ways, and yet the school drew out the best in them; exactly what one would hope for

the same applied to my daughter

Fred1new - 17 Dec 2013 13:54 - 34183 of 81564

Define "best".

Were you or your children escaping?

Mine frequently wished to.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 14:01 - 34184 of 81564

ok - to salve your pedantics ..... both (all 3) exceeded their obvious potential
a certain amount of luck involved, as one can only take a view (educated guess!) as to which school looks mutually best suited

Fred1new - 17 Dec 2013 14:23 - 34185 of 81564

Improvements must be down to their mothers input.

With my children, the inputs put down to me seem to have been scanty. Must check that.

Any negative traits are said to be down to me. But they can't have it both ways or can they.

8-)

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 14:53 - 34186 of 81564

my children learnt their charm from me; exactly how NOT to do it :-)

With Planes zooming over Heathrow it is time to have a reminder:

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 15:35 - 34188 of 81564

out of curiosity, where would you increase airport capacity or would you not bother?
if the latter, then your latest mistress would surely disagree

Stan - 17 Dec 2013 15:49 - 34189 of 81564

Never mind more, lets just improve what we have now. That go's for everything.

MaxK - 17 Dec 2013 15:57 - 34190 of 81564

I don't see what the problem is with expanding airport capacity.

"they" say we have to, or we will lose out on trade etc.

Heathrow is chocker, but Stanstead and Gatwick are not (yet), why not expand the existing? They already have the transport infrastructure.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 15:59 - 34191 of 81564

stansted is certainly a dog to get to but gtw is on the shortlist for extra capacity (runway)

Stan - how do you "improve" if there is insufficient physical air/runway space to do so?

Stan - 17 Dec 2013 16:03 - 34192 of 81564

It's not the only place where planes land, tell them they will have to land on another one or wait.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 16:05 - 34193 of 81564

now that's a really bright answer
create extra space by taking out 3 lanes on M25 perhaps?

Stan - 17 Dec 2013 16:21 - 34194 of 81564

No, that's the correct answer.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 16:36 - 34195 of 81564

so you'ld divert planes all over the place and/or let them stack until they run out of fuel?

Fred1new - 17 Dec 2013 16:38 - 34196 of 81564

What is against Birmingham Airport?

(Other than it is bloody unsocial to picking up and dropping off passengers.

They make a charge, if this is done by car or similar.)

=======

But it is UK central with future good train connections.

I suppose the NIMBYS or old reactionaries.

I rarely if ever fly, don't like the delays to getting to the airport, booking in and out and the B. walk to the planes. etc.

Prefer sitting in my RV, reading a book, or watching the world go by, while drinking fresh coffee and eating fresh toasted buns.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 16:56 - 34197 of 81564

if one built HS2 b'ham just might work, but much will depend on its location and ability to cope with a lot more traffic
i'm sure it must have been looked at along with manchester and leeds/bradford but found badly wanting for whatever reasons

an RV is what?
a campervan or more like a winnebago?

i agree that flying can be a pain, so if i go to paris or calais, then the train is by far the quickest and easiest
however, provence and the like is far too tiring and hard work and everything else by road
rotterdam is impossible other than by air, and the same applies to a great many cities even in nearby europe

doodlebug4 - 17 Dec 2013 17:02 - 34198 of 81564

Part of the trouble is that the whole transport system in England is creaking. If you look into the wider aspects of why this country needs more runways, doesn't it just reflect that our infrastructure cannot cope with the demand due to the fact that we now have far too many people living in this small country. Politicians - whatever political party - need to stop yacking on about runways and pay more attention to the fact that we need more hospitals, care homes, schools, roads etc. etc. And on the basis that, it is never too late, we need some realistic immigration control.

Stan - 17 Dec 2013 17:23 - 34199 of 81564

If you do want more space in the SE, What's up with enlarging Manston and connections?

Ed: Also Alf, use the train in Europe when traveling, far more sociable and a lot more beneficial for emissions.

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 17:24 - 34200 of 81564

i agree one needs all of the above, but if a project needs gov't rather than private funding, how do you allocate priorities as for sure there's a limited pot, regardless of whether or not the country is prospering

i suspect this airport project can and will be financed outside the exchequer, or at least i can't see why it should not be, but then i have no idea how these things are worked

cynic - 17 Dec 2013 17:26 - 34201 of 81564

Stan you muppet, why would you need to enlarge manston - surely not much larger than the original fighter command aerodrome - when gtw is already there as is hrw

perhaps you should put yourself forward as a candidate at the next election, as clearly you have great vision and imagination .... perhaps fawlty would even turn up to vote for you
