Hello
I have a DELL laptop 8200, 10 mths old. The battery now dies after about 10 mins from a full charge. Previously it would last 2 hrs. I'm doing nothing different usage - wise.
Any thoughts on this much appreciated
Kevin

Kevin, you'll find Dell won't honour the warranty - batteries not part of the warranty. My Dell laptop battery is just about good enough to shut down if the mains goes off. I think long term you have to either use the battery or leave it out and use the machine on mains, I think the memory effect is significant espec if you (like I do) use it on mains all the time.

Thanks for that. I used to run it on the battery for the first two hours of each morning and then switch the power on, but I don't get that opportunity now. The machine is fine though.

psued11, try running the battery totally flat and then recharging it fully, and repeat a couple of times. Otherwise get a new battery...
Rechargeable batteries generally don't like being used in the way you say, they prefer to be discharged each time (memory effect).

Hi
I've downloaded the update version of ie6 (previously had ie5) from microsoft website. My problem is I can't open any attachment in outlook express. It's there but not highlighted. Any ideas as to how I might overcome this problem.
Many thanks.

Harvey, Tools/Options/Security tab and untick "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."

Thanks - tended to run it to only 5 mins battery life
Think a new battery is about 50

I struggled with enabling Messenger last night, but couldn't get it to accept the new e-mail address I wanted applied. By creating the new identity, I lost all the contacts details in my main identity and it looked as though logging on to messenger shows everybody on the site my e-mail details, which doesn't sound so great. BT Helpdesk could see the problem but couldn't sort it, saying it was an Outlook Express issue.
Now I appear to be permantly 'online' even though I did my level best to disable the wretched thing. Removing the programme clearly didn't work! If I am, as the icon says, online, I don't know how, because I've deleted everything I can think of.
If anybody could spare a minute to add any illumination, I would be most grateful.

vasey, right click on the icon and click "sign out". Unfortunately the icon is very difficult to remove, but signing out will make it dormant.

Thanks Kayak, I've done that a few times now. It seems to reappear when this heap of junk is switched back on and unnervingly tells me I'm online!
Obviously Messenger will only activate someone logging on from a real e-mail address, but does it really display that to anybody reading the site? Sounds crazy but there didn't seem to be a box where I could select what name I wanted as a username.

vasey, if the icon in the tray has a little red circle with a white cross then you aren't online, and if you right click you won't get an option to sign out, only to sign in. Are you saying that it signs you in automatically on reboot? If it does that, try right click, sign in, and untick "remember my name and password on this computer".

P.S. the "display name" you can set in Tools/Options/Personal tab.

I can access that Tools/Options/Personal but the top box won't let me put something in! (That is where the e-mail details were, until I deleted them!)The 'Edit Profile' box wants me to download some add-in,

vasey, I think you have to sign in before changing the display name. If the display name is set to your email address then that is what everyone will see.

Vasey Call me tomorrow on 01902 676159 I might be able to talk you through it. In the meantime try this in in Outlook Express to stop messenger loading automatically. In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Options. Then General
Clear the Automatically log on to your messenger service check box. That should help with one problem.

vasey I had the same problem with messenger as well, It was quite easy to fix
when it showed my EMail instead of the name I wanted.
First I disabled the auto login from Outlook
Then .... checking ... BRB
