thanks for the goodwishes, guys. But.... I brought my computer home last night and discovered I couldn't connect to the internet because the XP nuked all info for my modem! Need to wait for new disk from BT, so lurking in easyinternet cafe until then. It's also wiped excel. Could be contacting you for help yet, andycarr!
Stressed but not panicstriken .....yet!

vasey,
What make modem have you got? You should be able to download a driver from the manufacturer's website.

very cute, hil! How to download when computer won't recognise the modem? ie no access to the internet at all! It's a well recognized prob and a fix is on MS website too - but I can't access that either. Need a new disc which should arrive Saturday.
I'm remarkably patient and resigned, but then this cafe is only a 5min walk from my house.... That's easyinternet cafe- not the Tea Rooms.

Do you have the Win XP install CD. You should be able to just reload the modem info via that. Justgo to Settings / Control Panel / Modems then add. It will detect your modem if required and then attempt to find the driver. If it is a recent and pretty normal modem then the driver should be on the XP CD.

Oooh! I've written that on my coffee cup and will try it later, thanks Haystack. Modem is BTVoyagerADSL, which I only got a few months ago when I went Broadband. I think that qualifies as 'normal'.

vasey,
The blindingly obvious didn't occur to me.
:-)
I presume you're referring to your ADSL modem. Do you not have an old 56k connection anywhere so you can download?

I do, but it would probably hit the same probs. Plus give me nightmares with blocking phone line, I suppose.
Not all so bad here, Hil. Some quite decent talent, if they were scrubbed up....
Back later.

If they were scrubbed up? What are they? Tramps, students or builders? If it's the latter, I hope they haven't got builders botty. If it's one of the first two, thanks but no thanks.

Hi Vasey
I am surprised to hear Win XP didn't auto detect your modem and install a driver. It's got a pretty comprehensive driver database. Haystack's suggestion was a good one though, as it forces XP to have another look.
Let me know if the disc from BT doesn't work.

Hi all, Forky back again. Good to see all the old stagers posting again.
vasey
You are worrying me, I have just decided to put xp on my PC and you come up with problems, if I had hair it would fall out with worry.
Another red day on the markets but oddly very little change on my portfolio. Odd but reassuring.
Time to celebrate with a nice bowl of sherry trifle.

forky, don't worry. By the time Mr Euro and I have successfully installed XP, we should have the definitive guide for you to follow. But most important rule I've learned is to back up anything and everything. E-mail, all docs, address book, ANYTHING. 'Cos XP nukes anything that was on earth before it, as far as I can see. And, don't even think about it until you have located every programme disc you want on your machine after XP is installed. Apparently I need Word 97 - which never came on a CD, I think, but I'm being asked for a CD key. It doesn't acknowledge update CDs.
andycarr: the advantage of waiting for the BT disc is that, apparently it incorporates a lot of the updates I would need from MS anyway! Meanwhile, Pret coffee and internet cafe again.
morning GD.
