Dil, are they near each other? do they have ethernet ports?

Dil - 13 Aug 2005 10:34 - 3517 of 11003

About 10 foot apart and whats an earthnet port ?

They are both less than two years old , one is a laptop if that helps.

Spaceman - 13 Aug 2005 10:57 - 3518 of 11003

I would go for a cheap router from somewhere like Ebuyer for example this one :-Example ADSL Router with Modem (I have not used that one but it shows what sort of thing you need). This box replaces the modedm you already have (which is probably a USB thing) It becomes responsible for the broadband connection, you plug each Pc ito it using an ethernet cable. (as your PCs are new you probably already have ethernet in them)

Dil, Ethernet recognition picture ;-)

Dil - 13 Aug 2005 12:35 - 3521 of 11003

Looks just the job , ordered one.

I have two pcs sharing one broadband connection

One is running an application which receives data via satellite

Is there any way I can remotely use that application from the other PC?

Thanks

Do all adsl wireless routers work with all adsl ISP's?

Thanks

ADAM - 14 Aug 2005 17:33 - 3525 of 11003

Dorothy,

If the two PC's are connected. Also depends on the software as it might have restrictions to 1 user etc.

Velocity,

Should do, why are you having problems or thinking of ordering one?

Velocity - 14 Aug 2005 17:38 - 3526 of 11003

ADAM - Thanks for that, thinking of ordering one from Ebuyer.com, just wasn't sure whether it would work with my ISP, which is Pipex.

Kayak - 14 Aug 2005 18:32 - 3527 of 11003

Dorothy, if you have Windows XP you can use Remote Desktop to see the desktop of the first PC from the second PC. That is assuming that your satellite box is connected via USB or is an internal card in the first PC. If it is connected via a network connection you might be able to access it directly from the second PC and therefore simply run the application from the second PC.

Seymour Clearly - 14 Aug 2005 18:52 - 3528 of 11003

Velocity, you must get a wireless modem router, not just a router.

I use Pipex and use a 3com Officeconnect wireless modem router model no. 3CRWE754G72-A without difficulty.

Velocity - 14 Aug 2005 20:58 - 3529 of 11003

Seymour Clearly - thanks, I wasn't aware of that. I'm looking at this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=74902

Looks okay, got some good reviews etc - I think it's alright, innit??

Seymour Clearly - 15 Aug 2005 00:09 - 3530 of 11003

Probably OK, but they ain't got any at present! My instincts with computer equipment is always to go with recognised brand names as they get the product right. Sometimes you get a much better bit of kit for very little extra money, especially where connections need to be made to other kit!.

The ebuyer branded stuff is usually a badge engineered product anyway.

ThePublisher - 15 Aug 2005 07:38 - 3531 of 11003

Anyone as naive as I am about wireless and routers would be well looked after by Broadbandbuyer.com.

They have a splendid help desk who seem to thrive on challenges - and getting me sorted out was one.

They'll also make sure you buy the right kit if you feel inclined to talk to them on the phone before placing your order.

scussy - 15 Aug 2005 21:58 - 3532 of 11003

just installed NAV internet security 2005,
the problem i am having is that windows firwall is being turned off after restart,
any ideas how to keep windows XP firewall working with NAV 2005,

many thanks

steve

Kayak - 15 Aug 2005 22:10 - 3533 of 11003

scussy, NAV internet security includes a firewall. It makes no sense at all to keep both firewalls running so stick with the NAV one which is bound to be better.

scussy - 16 Aug 2005 00:19 - 3534 of 11003

thanks Kayak, looking into nortons help and it seems that it is nortons or windows that you choose,so as you say NAV is better to have working,i just though it strange that running my 2004 nav,i still have windows XP firewall running ok too,
maybe with nav 2005 it does not let you,

many thanks

steve
