Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

"They should be looking at all areas of public spending," he said. "I am still slightly perplexed about why we contribute aid money to some of these countries that are on the path to prosperity."

The honours system has been an absolute joke for years, whichever party has been in power. Gongs are handed out like confetti, but not often to the people who genuinely deserve them.

i would still not like to see it dismantled, as there are many unknowns who deserve their recognition for all sorts of reasons, and this is a cost-free but very nice and public thank-you

There are other benefits to be handed out by corrupt governments. Bernie Eccleston gave £1m to Labour and was able to continue with ciggie adverts on F1 cars.

I like the idea of people in the community getting honours for charity work etc. CBE, MBE and OBE are good things. If you know someone deserving then you can propose them to the honours committee. It is a part of number 10. Then there is the Queen's own honours at her birthday time. Most of those are pretty sensible. My father got a Coronation Medal and later he got the Royal Victorian Order.
I don't like political honours unless the person has really done something out of the norm that is of benefit to society. Harold Wilson gave an award to his friend who manufactured his Gannex raincoat by making him a Lord.

One advantage in paying the housing benefit to the person who is renting and not the landlord is that the landlord will not know that the person is on benefits.......ends
Hays not if its written into the tenancy agreement which is the case with most agreements as most landlords get them from W H Smith pre printed.
Not only that but if it is made clear the landlord doesnt accept people on benefits if this rule is infringed the landlord can ask them to leave immediatly. The contract is broken.

One bloke where I used to work for in the civil service in the DHSS, never had a day off work in 42 years and was honoured as per Hays post above by the personnel team who put his name forward............
problem is the little weazel walked through picket lines time and time again and was despised by most people in the building.
Most of those walking through the picket line gave up their days pay and paid it either to a charity or to the Union benevolent fund.
When asked if he thought it responsible to take a 5% pay rise and his job saved once(by the Union) he replied he didnt believe in striking ohhh no, but we then asked him did he realise hed be on a salary 24% lower than fellow colleagues he just didnt want to know, he said its management who have paid me.
Suffice to say just a handfull of 200 people turned up for his leaving party.

My father got his in 1954. The order is different to the medal. The order is a bit like the order of the garter. They have a service together in St Geoge's chapel and have a procession wearing the order. It ceases on your death as it is a membership system.
He got his while working at the palace before and after the coronation. Then he went round the world 1953/4 on the Royal Tour for 6 months. He used to go up to Balmoral and Windsor at various times.

Very interesting alders and Hays. I like personal history like that. I always find it very educating and exciting in a way.
Afraid my family dont have anything like that, although my uncle who played cricket for Yorkshire and England Johnny Wardle once shook a kings hand at lords or so goes the family tale.
Which King I dont know, havent a clue about that side of History, I did economic and social.
