UK govt hires Goldman Sachs to probe Northern Rock balance sheet - report
AFX
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Investment bank Goldman Sachs has been drafted in by the UK government to discover the exact value of the assets and potential liabilities at embattled Northern Rock PLC, according to the Daily Expresss.
The report said the Wall Street firm has been ordered to find out the scale of any potential liabilities facing taxpayers should the bank collapse.
The Express said Goldman Sachs was instructed only after the government had given the Bank of England the go-ahead to underwrite deposits held by Northern Rock savers.
All three parties declined to comment, the newspaper added.

short 165 .... and i think that sums it up nicely ..... for the moment, there are good chances of making money in either direction, but permanent vigilance would be wise.

Its seem strange when you say that NRK is looking for a buyer. It already has a group of owners, every shareholder, as they own the company, not the board. For every share not in float a market maker of dealer has taken liability for it by purchasing it from the last holder.
There does appear to be plenty of support at current levels however, if I was considering entering into the fray on this one, I would wait for a significant drop after the ex divi has been declared and look to trade purely on the rises in sp without having to hold on for the divi.
The above are just observations made by myself and posted tounge in cheek as I see it.

MADRID, Sept 25 (Reuters) - A group of investors headed by a Spanish entrepreneur is interested in buying ailing British mortgage lender Northern Rock (NRK.L: Quote, Profile , Research), Spanish daily El Mundo reported on Tuesday, citing sources close to the entrepreneur's company Nueva Rumasa.
The group wrote to Northern Rock's chief executive Adam J Applegarth on Sept. 21, stating: "Mr Jose Maria Ruiz-Mateos, representing a group of Spanish investors, would be interested in acquiring a package of shares in Northern Rock large enough to give him direction of the bank."
The British lender had acknowledged receipt of the letter but had not responded, said the paper.
The letter stated the investors would be prepared to meet with "the necessary authorities with a view to examining the possibilities of the acquisition".
Ruiz-Mateos previously built up a large business empire but had many of his assets confiscated by the socialist government in the 1980s.
Northern Rock said it would not comment on the report.
