"Lloyds Banking Group is exploring ways to reduce the workload on Antio Horta-Osio, its chief executive, as it attempts to convince investors he will be able to make a successful comeback from a period of medical leave.
The state-backed bank is considering fortifying the support around Mr Horta-Osio to ease the pressures of the top job, according to people familiar with its thinking.
This could include appointing a chief operating officer to act as an effective deputy and handing more responsibility to a small group of other senior executives.
Mr Horta-Osio has been absent since November 2, when he announced he would be taking up to eight weeks off to recover from exhaustion. Lloyds says he is recuperating well and is on track to return as planned before the end of the year.
However, shareholders have made clear that the Portuguese chief executive cannot return to business as usual. Lloyds is coming under pressure from shareholders to push through substantial changes to the way he operates amid fears he could return only to fall ill again in future.
One option is strengthening an inner circle of senior directors centred on a chief operating officer who would sit between Mr Horta-Osio and his 12-strong group executive committee.
Antonio Lorenzo, who joined from Santander and led Lloyds strategic review announced in June, could be appointed as deputy to Mr Horta-Osio, according to people close to the bank, while Mark Fisher, who has led the integration of HBOS, would also be a candidate for a higher profile role.
Lloyds could offload some of the work around restructuring its balance sheet to George Culmer, the incoming finance director who is set to join from Royal Sun Alliance, the insurer, next year.
The reshuffle could also see David Roberts take a more hands-on role. The non executive director has been lined up as a temporary replacement for Mr Horta-Osio should his leave be extended."
