Owner of Postman Pat delivers 172% increase in profit

POSTMAN PAT helped to deliver record results for his owner Entertainment Rights (ER) yesterday.

ER, the intellectual property group that also owns the rights to Basil Brush and Little Red Tractor, said yesterday that pre-tax profits jumped 172 per cent to 6 million in 2005, and turnover increased 21 per cent to 30.7 million.

Mike Heap, the chief executive, said that Postman Pat had been an important factor behind the strong results. The character is seen in the five largest pre-school markets America, Japan, Britain, Germany and France and in more than 100 countries around the world.

However, ERs shares fell 1.25p to 37.25p, a move thought to be linked to a possible downgrade to earnings because of a higher tax charge.

The group also announced a deal with the United States Postal Service, where Postman Pat has been recruited to encourage children in Washington to write letters.

The success of the character also prompted an announcement that ER has been commissioned by the BBC to create a new series starring Pats cat, Jess, who will speak for the first time. Mr Heap said that he hoped to find the same success with Postman Pat as the group had with Rupert Bear, which ER acquired in October. An animated series is in production and is expected to air in autumn.

Mr Heap refused to rule out an approach for Chorion, the owner of Noddy, although he said that this was not on the agenda. Chorion is the subject of a management buyout led by its chairman, Lord Waheed Alli, and funded by 3i, the private equity firm.

ER said that it would not declare a dividend for the year.

Basil Brush has entered the race to buy Noddy owner Chorion. Entertainment Rights is the third bidder in a widening field for the company, whose management led by chairman Lord Alli want to take it private for 111m, or 425p a share. Hit Entertainment, home to Bob the Builder, is also looking at the books.

A meeting this Friday to vote on the buyout has been cancelled. But Alli is still confident he can win the day because of a close relationship with the Agatha Christie estate, with whom Chorion develops key characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Cheers Stock, I don't think the city liked the idea the last time ERT it looked at Chorion IMO it would enlarge the company significantly and any way big ears would get on very well with Jess.

Looks like its true.... Maybe Pat can make a couple of quid more delivering mail around toytown !

PRESS SPECULATION REGARDING CHORION PLC ('CHORION')


The Board of Entertainment Rights Plc ('Entertainment Rights') notes recent
press speculation regarding Entertainment Rights' intentions in respect of
Chorion. The Board of Entertainment Rights confirms that it is considering a
possible offer for Chorion and wishes to make clear that it is endeavouring to
assess the strategic and financial condition of Chorion. The work is at a
preliminary stage; shareholders in both Entertainment Rights and Chorion should
be aware that there is no certainty that an offer will be forthcoming.

Mr Heap ... The market reaction to very good results is disapointing may I suggest that while naturaly conserving resources at present; a small dividend would have boosted the price nicely and would not have restricted your plans for expansion ... your shareholders need encouraging as well as your workers.

On the last two occasions when ERT considered making offers for Chorion in Nov 2002 and Dec 2003, Chorion refused to let ERT conduct due diligence and they proceeded no further. It will be interesting to see how Chorion responds this time.

When ERT announce that they have pulled out of the bidding war (most probable) the sp will shoot up IMO to what I dont know.

HIT have withdrawn their offer for Chorion after due diligence yesterday.

ERT must, by 12 noon on Thursday 13 April 2006, either announce a firm intention to make an offer for Chorion.

Think the Chorion situation is holding this share back. As stated this will all come to a head on Thursday. Think this share is undervalued and still has great prospects.

Don't think Chorion deal would be bad news, they have a strong stable of products and would certainly enhance ERT stable and global profile.

Altium has reiterated its 'Buy' recommendation.

Been in and out of these since Jan 2005 in ISA. Done very well for me. Have also traded them.

The fundies are not quite what they were. Hmm.

Typical they get tipped then go down.
