OK, just tried to install Windows XP Home Edition 2 on my second main Hard Drive 120GB, it formated the Hard Drive to NTFS file system, now it says the drive is not there, and will not install XP anyfurther, How do I fix this?

sutherlh1 - 29 Aug 2005 09:56 - 3605 of 11003

Hi I have a 3 year old lexmark X83 all in one printer/scanner/photocopier which is giving up the ghost, it prints in black and white missing every forth or fifth line and leaves 'white' lines across printed material. It works OK in colour and I have tried the jet cleaning programmes and replacement ink cartridges, but no change.
Has anyone got any ideas for a replacement all in one printer? I am a light home user and would also like to be able to print photo quality.

Did you boot the computer from the setup CD? Is the second HDD set as the boot device in the BIOS?

Richgit69 - 29 Aug 2005 12:38 - 3607 of 11003

optimist, yes the computer booted up from the cd, and hdd is set as boot device, in bios ;-)

now the xp setup cant find ASAM file on cd tried to browse cd, but it just cancels setup when I do that ;-((

I once had simillar problems and it was caused by dodgy memory. Do a Google for "memoty test" which should throw up several utilities including one by Microsoft. In my case, once I identified the faulty RAM stick I removed it and all was OK but it could also be motherboard related. Also worth checking that the CPU fan is working.

When you try again, make sure that you delete all the partitions on the disk and then recreate them before reformatting. Go for full format not the quick one.

Optimist thanks ;-)

I now have my old C: drive with windows 98se on it
and now I have D: drive with windows xp home edition on it ;-)

When I start Windows 98se it does not see D: is that because of it been formated NTSC file sytem for XP and is normal ?

When I start XP, none of my icons, programs etc are set up to use, Whats the easiest way of doing this?

Been having intermittent problems with the ADSL modem for a few weeks now.
If the green link light is flashing when I switch on the machine, I can't connect.
And then I can't shut down properly either.
Daft question - is it the modem or the machine?

Mega Bucks - 29 Aug 2005 16:51 - 3611 of 11003

more like operator error :-)

chocolat - 29 Aug 2005 16:52 - 3612 of 11003

Thank you :)

Spaceman - 29 Aug 2005 18:16 - 3613 of 11003

chocolat, its one or the other ;-)

Whats the green lights called? or what model is the modem?

chocolat - 29 Aug 2005 18:19 - 3614 of 11003

I have power and link Spacie
and it's BT voyager USB :S

Spaceman - 29 Aug 2005 18:38 - 3615 of 11003

Chocolat, if the PC wont shut down properly that may be a problem with the driver for the modem, but it could be a host of other things as well. I would remove the modem software and then reinstall it.

chocolat - 29 Aug 2005 18:40 - 3616 of 11003

Oh 'eck :S

Re printer scanner. I have just looked into these and stronly recomend the Canon MP 750 (MP 780 if you want fax). You can pick them up on the web for about 180 delivered but they are more than worth it. Five seperate ink tanks (2 black) which you can easily get compatables at 2 each. Double sided printing, both totally auto and manual duplex. Excellent OCR and and photo printing. The software package is worth more than the total cost.(also prints direct on cd's and dvd's)
It is very easy to install and so quite that I keep going to check its still working.

If you compare it to some its cost is about four sets of ink replacement.
Graeme. (Two friends have seen / used mine and bought one)

I can't help with your modem, but I've just had a problem with another router. Despite repeated reboots, it would not connect. I solved it by a power off reboot.

Richgit

Win 98 can't read NTFS partitions. You would have to install XP on a FAT32 partition in order for Win 98 to see it. NTFS is far better though.

Re your icons etc. don't be tempted to take any shortcuts, install each program onto XP. Make sure that they are installed onto the XP disc and not the WIN 98 one.

chocolat - 29 Aug 2005 20:17 - 3619 of 11003

Thanks Optimist - I'll bear that in mind next time. Up to now I've tried allsorts, and suddenly for no reason (as it turns out) it works again. I notified BT in the first instance, which, coincidentally or not, occurred about a week after the 2MB upgrade.

Richgit69 - 29 Aug 2005 20:35 - 3620 of 11003

Optimist, thanks ;-)

I got xp working and installed my ASDL modem connected to the internet only to be giving a virus, NT Authority System which shuts down xp once it's started, now I cant get a virus checker to run or download a fix for xp, not enough time before it closes down, ;-(

Tell me why I decided to updated to Windows XP again, oh yes becasuse all my family and friends told me it was the best thing since sliced bread. LYING B*******

Spaceman - 29 Aug 2005 21:08 - 3621 of 11003

RG, this should be solvable but it needs a bit of thought and I dont have time now. Try doing a safe mode start and scanning from there.

However you have a major problem if you have virus after a clean install, there is something wrong with what your doing, XP is prone to virus infections but this sounds to me as though you already had the virus somewhere on your system for example on aother hard disk.

I dont know which OS you had before but if it was made by MS them XP is better !

Richgit69 - 29 Aug 2005 21:24 - 3622 of 11003

Spaceman, I've still got windows 98se on my other harddrives, and checked them all with sophos virus checker before I installed XP on other Disk ;-)

I can only run virus checker from win98se, so itdoes not find the XP disk ;-(

ADAM - 29 Aug 2005 22:19 - 3623 of 11003

Richgit69,

Either try unplugging your broadband, as sometimes NT Authority System shuts it down because of possible remote access.

or if you have time hit "start" "run" and type in

shutdown -a

This stops it shutting down.

Do you know the name of the virus? As this could be a problem with XP, as there was a similar problem with 2000.

(PS Why are you keeping the old drive?)
