If you don't have enough time download and apply the patch before the PC reboots,

Go to start > run > Services.msc.
Right click Remote Procedure Call.
Select Properties > Recovery.
On all three drop-down boxes in this window, select "Take no action."

This temp fix will give you the time to update. After the update, reverse the procedure to get RPC back.

If you are not already doing so, make sure you do any virus shecks in safe mode. Your friends are right, XP is very good although XP Pro is the best, but it is very difficult to safely get up to date unless you are behind a firewall/router.

I assume that you are using a modem to connect to the internet, therefore I suggest that you use the following procedure:-

Boot into XP, connect to the internet and run Windows Update.
Get the list of updates required and print it out.
Go back into Win 98 which I assume is still OK
Download all the updates to a directory on your Win 98 disc. You will have to hunt for them on the MS site, try under the network administrator download sections.
Boot XP again but don't connect to the internet.
Install the fixes from your Win98 drive.
Boot into safe mode and run a virus check.

It got a whole lot worse last night, updated XP with service packs 1 & 2, then all hell broke loss, none of my software will work cann't get access to internet to update, totally ********** ******* *******

using 98se for the time been, untill I find out whats going on ;-(

If your installation disk did not have SP2 on it, then it is a very old one. If you bought it from a retailer then take it back for a refund and get an uptodate disk.

You don't need SP1 in order to install SP2 but no pre SP2 system should be connected directly to the internet even to get the updates.

As yours is a new installation, I'd be tempted to start again and buy or borrow a router/ firewall, which should be good enough to gonnect to the Internet while you update your system. If you don't want to get a router, you could download SP2 and the other fixes onto the Win 98 disk but SP2 is 270 MB and some of the other ones are also large files.

The Blaster worm will not let you update XP. You need to remove it first.

Symantec have a removal tool for the Blaster worm:

Well got rid of 14 viruses, by putting sophos on and now got XP working with the internet 75% of the time ;-)

still got a few problems ;-(

Sometimes when I connect to the internet and start IE it will not access any of the pages on the Net, I have to start maybe 2 or 3 times is there a fix for this?

Trying to load CMC Spread bet http:\\www.deal4freelite.co.uk and after entering my details it just sits there, I've uploaded all new java files etc, do I need to use proxy instead on XP?

I use CMC cfd with no special settings and no problems so you must have some rouge settings somewhere. You could start with C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts - open in Notebook and the only uncommented entry on a new system should be 127.0.0.1 localhost

Your XP system is probably cleanable, but I still think that if it is a new system you would be better off reformatting the disk and installing SP2 and other fixes from files downloaded to your Win 98 disc.

I got cmc working I was at the wrong page ;-)

And IE told me to change my internet setting to LAN connection, so changed it back and got IE working for now ;-)

Only problem I got now is SSRT ;-)

I'm having real problems with my internet connection (Pipex). Over the last few days sometimes my connection has been great, other times it's intermittent. If I try (for example) to load MAM's home page which is my default home page, sometimes it connects, other times it times out. The sync light flashes a bit, and the online light flashes furiously - however sometimes neither of these lights are on, but when the connection is faulty the Online light stays off. Sometimes it reconnects for no good reason, other times I reboot the whole PC - which seems to be a hit and miss affair for it to work.

The wireless Firewall router always has power and WLAN lights on, the PC is connected via a normal patch cable with the wireless facility disabled on the PC.

Is this an issue with the ISP or something else? Help!!!

hangon, this thread is in constant use (note the dates of the recent posts), but there's a history to it as well. The originator, Crocodile, passed away suddenly over a year ago.
He was well known to a lot of the posters on here for his help and inspiration. There's a mine of information on here if you know where to look so no-one has any inclination to restart this thread for both those reasons.

Have you tried re-booting the router? Mine sometimes gets into a muddle. I suggest that you turn everything off and let it re-start.

My exchange has been updated over the past week and my connection has been disrupted.

Whatever you do, do NOT ring Pipex, I used to be with them until one day they kept me on hold for over two hours and then disconnected me as "the office is now closed"!

I also think there may be universal problems with the internet as many sites are running very slow. Barclays has just gone!

ADAM, Barclays were having major problems last night as well.

Barclays are not compatible with Belkin modem/routers! I have had lots of problems and Belkin have been very helpful but I keep having to enter their website and do settings again. They tell me that the Barclays stockbrokers website is mentioned by many of their customers - it just shows page cannot be displayed.!

jj50, are you sure about that? I think it might be relate to the firewall? I use a belkin router with Barclays and it works fine.

Barclays internet banking is defiantly fussy about security settings and setup and changes often cause problems wit them. I use Egg Money Manager to logon to 6 different banks and when I do hit a problem its always Barclays ! I have not looked into them very thoroughly but I think that they have more layers of security checks than the others.

Interesting Spaceman - the banking I have no problem with, it is the www.stockbrokers.barclays.co.uk and I can use it but the problem keeps recurring. I tried switching my firewall off as a test and still couldn't access the site and it is the same on all my computers. Belkin have been very patient and gave me a formula for clearing the black list and it lasts a couple of days and then problems start again, till I reset.

Suppose the security is a good thing though but it is not good for instant trading!

jj, interesting, i also use barclays stockbrokers and dont have problems with them either. Sometimes these problems are not where you think, what else do you have running on your machine? do you run any popup blockers, adaware, realtime scnners etc? if so could you ist them (or email if you would prefer).
