Richgit, if it is exactly 1.5 hours each time then it points to an idle timeout. If you have a modem/router look in the router set up and if you have a modem look in the Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab/select ADSL connection/Settings/Advanced.
If it is more random then it is likely to be your ADSL line having problems. In that case if your modem or router has lights you should see a pattern that when looked up in the manual means 'loss of sync'.

OK read your post 3656 now. It is likely that you've been upgraded to 2Mb but it doesn't quite work. Try a speed test:

Rich,
That's Pipex all over, they are the worst ADSL company in the coutry. I once was on hold for over two hours and then the cut me off with a message that the office is now closed. I left the next day at a cost of 60. On Plusnet now and the longest I have had to wait is 20mins and that is peak time.
You can also have a email support note with them that they will answer same day.
It is either a problem with your modem or with Pipex by the sounds of it. I recently changed one of the office's modems because it kept dropping the line or connected at minimal levels.
Is your a modem or modem router? (Do you need to connect?)

Rich, I'm also with Pipex and have been getting intermittently cut off in the middle of a session, usually late at night or early morning, no question of timeout as I'm usually in the middle of accessing info on the web. Haven't tried accessing during the day as I've been at work.
I'm seriously thinking of swapping ISP, cause Pipex aren't cheap, but I wonder if this is a general web problem or specific to Pipex.

Seymour, I am using an old config setup and its been working for 3 hours now ;-) but agree with you Pipex are expensive now, but I've used them for over 8 years and they seem to be more stable than others I hear about, unless people know of a reliable I mean very reliable ISP I'll have to stick with them for now ;-)))
Plus they dont filter junk email from my old dialup account which I've kept for 7.99 a month, and my ADSL is 23.99 for 500k a month not happy, but who do you go with thtats the big QUESTION????

I have problems at the moment. I'm trying to reinstall W98 on an old machine but it has registry errors (from aN XP install that went wrong), scandisk won't run and I can't get any further. Eventually wnat to install a legal copy of XP home.
Not sure what to do now.
edit and I have no Himem.sys apparently. Stuffed I think!

Or
PlusNet, also 14.99 for 2Mb/s unlimited if you don't do much P2P downloading (21.99 for unlimited P2P).
BTW 7.99 for a dial-up account is pretty expensive if you don't use it. I have a load of pay-as-you-go accounts with e.g. Freeuk, OneTel that cost nothing unless I use them. They all have associated email addresses that last forever if you pick up your mail regularly.

SC, boot from a W98 startup disk (floppy) and install W98 over the top. But why, if you want to install XP in the end?

SC, don't think you can go backwards in upgrading, like you have attempted from 98 to XP without completely reformating your disc. Here you need more help than I can offer.
But I am sure someone will come along.

I think Opto is right. If you want XP in the end then cut your losses and install XP from scratch. It's probably not a good idea to upgrade from 98 to XP anyway.
Bit tough if you've got data files on there but you could install it as a second disk to a working computer with sufficient fiddling, in order to get them off.

Mega, yes thats easy but the method depends on the MP3 thing you get, 10CD's wont take up much space so almost any MP3 player could handle them.
If you into HiFi then these are not hifi but they can sound prety good as long as you keep the compression as high as you can.
The market leader is the Apple Ipod series, they are all pretty good but they are not the cheapest, other good makes are iRiver and Sony.
