Crocodile - 14 Apr 2003 09:39 - 371 of 591

Thanks Hilary
whats the problem with the opening price ?
D.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 09:57 - 372 of 591

croc,

Your question is easy to address.

The BBY Friday closing offer was 170.5 rather than 169.25 as indicated within your post 360.

little woman,

I'll look back through my files and get back to you if that's ok.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 10:06 - 373 of 591

little woman,

You held 55172 KCOM shares. You opened the position at 36.25p and closed it at 38.5 realising a profit on the trade of 1,241.37. Your banked P/L on Friday evening before closing the KCOM trade was a loss of 1,735.46, and so the KCOM profit reduced this loss to 531.91 which is where it currently stands.

Does that answer your question satisfactorily?

Crocodile - 14 Apr 2003 10:14 - 374 of 591

Thanks hilary took my figures from Am and also GNI has 168.25 mid at close but can not see the spread on there
But please use your own numbers
Regards
D.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 10:16 - 375 of 591

I've just had another look at it, croc. It appears that am use the auction orders when they show their closing bid & offer whereas it's conventional practise to show the closing bid & offer at touch pre-auction.

Crocodile - 14 Apr 2003 10:31 - 376 of 591

Thanks Hilary

little woman - 14 Apr 2003 10:48 - 377 of 591

But my loss of 531.91 included the loss on my Barclays shares which I didn't include in my deal. I should have only had the orginal cost of the KCOM shares plus the profit to put into the new BARC deal.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 11:13 - 378 of 591

little woman,

The cell entitled "Banked P/L" contains the sum of the profit or loss from all of the trades which you have opened and closed previously. When I close a trade, I transfer your profit or loss from that trade into the "Banked P/L" cell. Your KCOM trade was closed at a profit of 1,241.37 and this profit was added to your "Banked P/L" cell. Your new BARC trade was opened using the then available funds which equal the difference between the total cost of your current open positions and your worth.

Your "Banked P/L" cell is currently showing the following values:

-2457.39+1785.49-1101.38+1241.37 and equals your loss of 531.91

The first loss of 2,457.39 represents your losses from before GoldDog went awol and when he was looking after things. The subsequent figures represent your profits and losses since I have been looking after the game.

Is that any clearer?

little woman - 14 Apr 2003 11:20 - 379 of 591

Yes, but the banked P/l cell included a loss from a deal that still has not been closed. That's why it should not have been included in the new trade.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 12:15 - 380 of 591

little woman,

Presumably you're referring to the partial closure of your BARC position to fund the opening of the KCOM position??

I've already realised for you the profit from when they were partially closed.

From post 295 on this thread:

littlewoman

Close 4638 BARC @ 378 plus existing funds allows a new trade of
Long 55172 KCOM @ 36.25 = 19,999.85

Those 4638 BARC shares realised a profit of 14.75p each or a total of 684.11. This is represented by the difference between the middle two figures in post 377 of 1,785.49 and 1,101.38. For my own convenience, I closed the whole position (1,785.49 profit) and then re-opened the smaller position at the same opening price writing the figures back. It's just the way that I chose to do it at the time which might make it appear confusing, but it is correct.

little woman - 14 Apr 2003 12:54 - 381 of 591

No I 'm refering to closing the remainder of the existing BARC which has not changed. The P/l balance included a loss from these shares, which you included in the proceeds of the KCOM shares which in turn reduced the amount of money available for the new BARC trade. But the balancing BARC have not been closed, and therefore cannot be used to reduced the amount available for the new trade.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 13:03 - 382 of 591

little woman,

Sorry but you've totally lost me now. I haven't got a clue what you're trying to say.

I've closed part of your BARC and you've realised that profit. The rest of the trade is still open and is currently running at a loss. I'm happy that my figures are correct. If you want to post up a different scenario with your figures I'll look at it.

jeffmack - 14 Apr 2003 13:15 - 383 of 591

Hilary
She's in out team, just give her 2k

little woman - 14 Apr 2003 13:17 - 384 of 591

Sorry, I'll start again.

The trade I made on Friday was to close my KCOM position. This should have meant my original investment 19,999.85 plus the profit of 1,785.89 making a total of 21,785.74 available to use for the new BARC Short trade.

But only 19,??? (sorry can't remember the actual figure) was actually used.

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 13:17 - 385 of 591

Ssssssssshhh, Jeff. I've already given each of us 4k. I don't want to overdo it and make it obvious.

:-)

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 13:25 - 386 of 591

Aaaaaah. I've got what you're saying now, little woman. You're talking about your available funds.

The amount available to trade is calculated as your net worth less the total cost of opening your existing trades. If you have an existing open position which is out of the money then this reduces the amount which is available for fresh trades. It's similar to the method employed by operators of margin accounts. That explains why your new BARC trade is less than the proceeds from your KCOM trade.

Likewise, open positions which are in profit generate "margin" to open fresh positions (subject to a maximum of 3 trades as per the game rules)

little woman - 14 Apr 2003 13:46 - 387 of 591

But the original balance of Barc has not changed. This amount was at a loss which you used against the KCOM money. The loss was caused by an increase in the BARC value but the value shown is still the same.

My brain is telling me that by taking the loss (don't have a problem with that) but leaving the orginal open position exactly the same the loss is still there and therefore has been applied twice.

I think what I'm getting at, is that existing open position has not been adjusted to take into account of the use of the loss against the profit.

I think I could be getting a headache!!!

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 14:23 - 388 of 591

little woman,

I didn't leave the original open BARC position exactly the same. I reduced it in size by the number of shares that you covered. Your figures are correct.

Crocodile - 14 Apr 2003 14:50 - 389 of 591

H,
Can you help with tax returns as well ?

hilary - 14 Apr 2003 14:59 - 390 of 591

croc,

Two words. The second word is "off". You're at liberty to choose your own first word.
