Have you tried disabling your firewall? IS it the XP one or the Norton one?

sutherlh1 - 21 Sep 2005 08:37 - 3739 of 11003

Yes I have tried disabling the XP fiewall but no effect. I can't do anything with Norton. I have also contactedNorton technical support. They have given me a link to their live support as my laptop can't download. Will let you know how I get on, thanks

Norton Anti-customerfriendly is worse than Samsung mobile phone software imo, sutherlh1. I tried to upgrade their poxy software a few months back and ended up chucking the bloody thing in the bin and re-installing Windows. My PC's worked about 10 times better without it.

rpaco - 21 Sep 2005 09:12 - 3741 of 11003

Sorry slightly confused, your PC went the bin? and you have installed windows on your phone? I couldnt get any response at all from Samsung tech support via web enquiry or email. And took Norton AV off and am using good old FREE AVG which seems to work very well. Oh and Free Zone Alarm firewal too. Dont trust Bills buggy version.

Help please. WinXP SP2 full up to date.

AVG scan always says I have a read error on 5 system files. I have tried to re copy these 5 files over from backup directories but the file is always in use. Even booting to command prompt only, they are still in use. Is there another way to replace systemfiles. I have tried booting from a floppy but of course it cant see the NTFS drives.
Any ideas please. the 5 files are all dlls kernel32, wsock32, shell32, ntoskrnl32, and user32.dll Is there a "repair" facility. wi

Sorry should have said XP Pro. and my last sentence got chopped. Should have read within windows.
I an happy to delve and use command line/console.

rpaco
Can you boot from your XP Pro CD and then exit to the command prompt?

rpaco - 21 Sep 2005 09:54 - 3745 of 11003

Will try it, do you mean the original or the SP2 CD?

skg83239 - 21 Sep 2005 10:32 - 3746 of 11003

rpaco,
If you have the source system files easily accessible (folder, floppy or on a CD) you only need to boot, which you definitely can do from the original XP CD.

Ok will try it later thanks.

Kayak - 21 Sep 2005 11:53 - 3748 of 11003

rpaco, not sure what you're trying to do. Does your Windows work fine apart from that? It is very normal for those files to be in use, they are very fundamental to the operation of Windows. AVG is probably merely saying that it can't open them to check them because they are in use, which is not surprising.

Now trying symantec live assistance to help me get my laptop back on the internet following Norton download. What a mess, most conversations end up being cut off before completion and seem to be going around in circles. Will I need to refomat my disc to sort this out and download windows XP again. Also I have no discs, it was all preloaded, do I have to buy another copy?

ADAM - 22 Sep 2005 16:33 - 3750 of 11003

Suth,

If you do not have any discs I would try to make reinstalling XP a last restort as you will then need to update all the drivers for the laptop (sound, video, keyboard etc) It could be a long process and never operate in the sameway again. I have experience of a dell once that used speedstep technology, which never properly worked after I reinstalled XP.

What is actually wrong with it now?

sutherlh1 - 22 Sep 2005 16:42 - 3751 of 11003

I downloaded Norton antispam version 2005 and since then I cannot access the internet or disable or remove Norton. I get 2 messages one saying a component is missing and the next a component is missing or damaged. The Norton screens don't display fully and I can't switch it off. AOL logon reports an issue with virsus firewall and internet explorer says this page cannot be displayed.

ADAM - 22 Sep 2005 17:46 - 3752 of 11003

Oh, your still in that mess, I thought you may have made some progress. I have never liked AOL for this very reason.

Have you tried removing Norton in Safe mode? By hitting F8 on the XP window.
