rpaco, not sure what you're trying to do. Does your Windows work fine apart from that? It is very normal for those files to be in use, they are very fundamental to the operation of Windows. AVG is probably merely saying that it can't open them to check them because they are in use, which is not surprising.

Now trying symantec live assistance to help me get my laptop back on the internet following Norton download. What a mess, most conversations end up being cut off before completion and seem to be going around in circles. Will I need to refomat my disc to sort this out and download windows XP again. Also I have no discs, it was all preloaded, do I have to buy another copy?

ADAM - 22 Sep 2005 16:33 - 3750 of 11003

Suth,

If you do not have any discs I would try to make reinstalling XP a last restort as you will then need to update all the drivers for the laptop (sound, video, keyboard etc) It could be a long process and never operate in the sameway again. I have experience of a dell once that used speedstep technology, which never properly worked after I reinstalled XP.

What is actually wrong with it now?

sutherlh1 - 22 Sep 2005 16:42 - 3751 of 11003

I downloaded Norton antispam version 2005 and since then I cannot access the internet or disable or remove Norton. I get 2 messages one saying a component is missing and the next a component is missing or damaged. The Norton screens don't display fully and I can't switch it off. AOL logon reports an issue with virsus firewall and internet explorer says this page cannot be displayed.

ADAM - 22 Sep 2005 17:46 - 3752 of 11003

Oh, your still in that mess, I thought you may have made some progress. I have never liked AOL for this very reason.

Have you tried removing Norton in Safe mode? By hitting F8 on the XP window.

DocProc - 25 Sep 2005 12:50 - 3754 of 11003

You need software that's something like this:

Make your own MP3 files from Audio CD

Mega Bucks - 25 Sep 2005 12:56 - 3755 of 11003

Bob,just what the doctor ordered :-) Many thanks..

Having problem transfering cds to mp3,is it possible to do it with windows media player ???

ADAM - 25 Sep 2005 16:05 - 3757 of 11003

I don't think so.

This is the software I use, very easy and free.

CDex

hilary - 25 Sep 2005 16:08 - 3758 of 11003

Mega,

You can use the rip function of Media Player (certainly version 10) to rip the music from CD and then turn into MP3 format.

Also checkout xilisoft.com for file conversion utilities and limewire.com for downloading MP3's.

Mega Bucks - 25 Sep 2005 19:42 - 3759 of 11003

Still no joy with this heap of crap called a mp3 player, have tried most things but to no avail,is this a common problem or just me ????

Have i got to format this thing or what?? It sees the player as drive I and it puts a file in the name of the source file but does not appear to transfer !!!

Oh well looks like it could well go back :-(

Rick...

Seymour Clearly - 25 Sep 2005 22:46 - 3760 of 11003

Rick, could it similar to the way XP copies files to CD's i.e. it prepares the files to write but doesn't write them to the player until you give an extra command?

Mega Bucks - 26 Sep 2005 05:35 - 3761 of 11003

Update on Mp3 fiasco,it does not seem to work any more,HOW i aint got a clue :-)but will return it during the week and will get a full refund and continue using me good old sony walkman !!! Shame it did look sexy though :-)

Many thanks to all the people offering help...

Rick...

Mega Bucks

If you have Windows Media player installed on your machine, download the Microsoft Plus pack for Windows Media Player (13 from the MS site) also download the MS MP3 converter which is free but requires the Plus Pack.

Once you have those, assuming you have the disc space, rip your CD's to disc in the WMA lossles format which is almost CD quality, and then use the file converter which is a separate program that comes with the Plus Pack, to make copies in whichever format you want.

Richgit69 - 29 Sep 2005 17:09 - 3763 of 11003

in the last month both of my TFT monitor power supply units have packed in, and the are both out off warrenty, where can I buy two power supply untils, that will work with them instead of buying two other TFT monitors?

1 x AOC 17" TFT monitor
1 x Proview 17" TFT monitor

Snip - 29 Sep 2005 19:39 - 3764 of 11003

I have had endless dropped connections from my adsl via plus.com and voyager105 modem today. Every 5 minutes. It is driving me mad and I phoned them twice for help. Told me to check my filters etc etc

Then I found Priscilla and used her driver fix and so far I have been on line for 5 minutes and fingers crossed. Oh 6 minutes. Priscilla I have looked evrywhere on the net for an answer and it looks as though it might be here on this thread. 7 minutes and counting. I could hug you

ADAM - 29 Sep 2005 21:58 - 3765 of 11003

Rich,

This is Proview UK: http://www.proview.co.uk/index2.htm

The Global site doesn't seem to stock AC adapters for TFT screens.

Here is a list of AOC distributers in the UK:

http://www.aoc-europe.com/distr_uk_popup_test1.html

Good luck.

(PS There is always Ebay, just plug in the part number)

Seymour Clearly - 29 Sep 2005 22:21 - 3766 of 11003

Rich, you can get mains adaptors that have variable outputs and an array of separate plugs to plug in the back

Try Maplin

then type "Mains adaptors" into the search box.

Kayak - 29 Sep 2005 23:37 - 3767 of 11003

The cheapest solution is likely to be to buy a variable output one as SC says. Definitely buy one that is 'regulated' (it means the voltage supplied does not vary in relation to the current drawn). Make absolutely sure that you have the voltage and polarity set correctly before connecting up, and once it works put a spot of superglue on the setting mechanism so that there is no chance of it moving by accident.
