Immigration report 'held back by Downing Street'
Downing Street accused of suppressing a report that shows that immigrants take fewer jobs away from British workers than previously claimed by Theresa May, the Home Secretary
By Keith Perry8:00AM GMT 05 Mar 2014
Downing Street has been accused of suppressing a report which found that immigrants are not preventing as many British workers from getting jobs as previously claimed.
Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has repeatedly cited research by the Migration Advisory Committee that found 23 British workers are left unemployed for every 100 new arrivals.
But a study by civil servants has concluded that the 'displacement' figure is actually much lower, according to the BBC's Newsnight programme.
The report was apparently completed last year but has not been released amid concerns it could prove politically awkward for ministers.
The disclosures will prove embarrassing for Mrs May and come as figures showed that David Cameron’s pledge to reduce net migration to below 100,000 people a year by 2015 is unlikely to be met.
Internal emails seen by Newsnight showed that one civil servant described the MAC research used by Mrs May was "not robust enough given the wider evidence".
Critics accused Mr Cameron of failing to publish the report because it would challenge Mrs May’s claims.
Julian Huppert, the Liberal Democrat MP, said: "It's obvious that this report should be published as quickly as possible.
"We have to have the right figures, so we can make the right decisions, so that we get the best people here to help our economy."
Nigel Farage, the Ukip leader, said: “I don’t know what the new figure is going to be but whatever it is, the report is going to show that there is displacement of British workers because of excess oversupply in the labour market caused by open-door immigration to southern and eastern Europe.
“What we really need to see is what the displacement of UK workers’ jobs from the European Union is because that is the issue.”
David Hanson, the shadow immigration minister, said: "The British people should have information made available to them so they can make a judgement about the impact of immigration on jobs.
"This should be done on the basis of fact, not more empty rhetoric or spin from the Government."
A Government spokesperson said: “Reducing immigration so our economy delivers for people who want to work hard and play by the rules is part of our long-term economic plan to build a stronger, more competitive economy and secure a better future for Britain. We don’t comment on internal government documents.”

Thats just it, hit the nail on the head Max, thier arent any jobs, just 6 month training courses where trainees (tories call them apprentices)are taken of unemployment figures and transfered to employed figures (you couldnt make it up) and then when finished are pushed on another 6 month course or get a sanction and starve.

Do they have apprentice scheme at Eton as numerous ex-attenders at that institution never end up in useful employment?
Or are apprentices only for the plebs?

fossy - thge following is the bit you should have highlighted, as it's the bit i heard this morning
“What we really need to see is what the displacement of UK workers’ jobs from the European Union is because that is the issue.”
that is to say, this new report would appear to be about the effect of non-eu immigrants, who are perhaps more likely to be better qualified
i wonder how you would have reacted had this "suppressed" report showed immigrants to be more detrimental to the native uk workforce than had previously been published
i don't actually, as i know full well you would have just scuttled off into a corner and come up with the fact that you can't trust statistics or somesuch

It is a toss up who will be the most boring. A bit pointless as Farage will have no MPs and won't be around any more. He has said he will resign if he gets no MPs.

There are 87 MEPs in the UK, split across 12 regions.
Each region has between 3 and 11 MEPs. Each MEP in a region represents the people living in that region at the European Parliament.
Here's the Wikipedia entry for the 2009 MEP election:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Parliament_election,_2009_(United_Kingdom)
Roughly, it's as follows. If you look at the Wiki page, you'll see it's not quite that simple. And then of course, there's your average 'Robert Kilroy Silk-type', who you'll come across and who gets elected, gets chucked out, maybe forms a new party, and then resigns, or gets expelled for expenses fraud.
Personally, I don't think enough people in the UK take it seriously. I'm one of them and I'd really like us to come out of the EU. But here's how I see it:
Tories: 28 seats
Labour: 19 seats
UKIP: 13 seats
Lib Dems: 11 seats
Greens: 2 seats
BNP: 2 seats
SNP: 2 seats
Plaid Cymru: 1 seat

Ukraine crisis: Crimea MPs vote to join Russia
MPs in the southern Ukrainian region of Crimea have voted to become part of the Russian Federation.
Parliament said the decision would be put to the Crimean people for their verdict in a referendum on 16 March.
A government minister in Kiev said they believe it would be unconstitutional for Crimea to join Russia.
Crimea, a region whose population is mostly ethnic Russian, has been at the centre of tensions following the fall of Ukraine's pro-Moscow president.
Pro-Russian and Russian forces have been in de facto control of the peninsula, which already enjoys a degree of autonomy from Kiev, for several days.
The announcement from Crimea's parliament comes as EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss how to respond to Russia's troop deployment on Ukrainian soil.
