BRESIE, connecting Windows 98 computers to Windows 2000/XP networks has outfoxed the best minds. I did get it to work eventually once. First thing to do is to set the workgroup correctly on the Windows 98 client (Control Panel/Network if I remember correctly) since the default is unhelpfully different for 98 and XP. If that isn't enough these notes I made a couple of years ago (W98 connecting to W2000) may or may not help.

Access control tab: Share-level access control

Server username/passwords need not be set up on client

To answer your question directly you can check to see if the network "ANY" or "WIRELESS" is listed in Control Panel/Network Conections/Wireless Network Connection[or similar]/Properties/Prefered networks see the link from Dell:

I installed Java Sunmicrosystems 5 yesterday cos some p2p software wanted to, but thought nothing of it untill I started to load up my webpages for cmc deal4freelite.com/spreadbet the popup java boxes etc dont work, did as it suggested remove files/folders etc but it would not re-install the cmc platform/software. in the end I uninstalled Java 5 and got cmc back up and running ;-)

I need to installed Java 5 but also need my money pages how do I do this? ;-)

I need a little advice regarding the addition of a 2nd monitor.

I currently trade of a laptop (Dell) which runs off XP Pro and 1Gb ram. However, I would like to be able to use an additional monitor from time to time. Before embarking on getting hold of one I'd like to know whether its possible to just plug in and play? I'd also need to know the configurations that I'll have to do.

If not, would I need to add the required graphics card? As far as I know the current graphics card is integrated together with the motherboard so I'm assumming that adding the necessary card would not be possible?

Any advice on this would be welcome.

Bakko, most laptops will give you a second monitor (unless they're really cheap). It sounds like your Dell is a premium model. Right click on your screen displa and select "Properties". Click the "Settings" tab and it should give you a display showing one or two monitors. If it's two monitors then you're in business. Connect your new display and adapt the settings in this way.

I'm told that if I change these values, it will improve my PC performance but I don't know where to go to change them.

Greystone, they are registry changes but to make it easy, download Cablenut. Ignore the ready-made ADSL profiles, just change TcpWindowSize to 38400 (assuming you have ADSL) and the two MaxConnections parameters to 16, and make all other fields blank. The latter one particularly will make a big difference, it is the maximum number of images etc. on a web page that IE can download at the same time. These parameters aren't dangerous. Also, if you have a router rather than a USB modem, ensure that the MTU size set in the router settings is 1500.

Thanks for that download Kayak. I have installed the program and changed the settings. I am soon to have my broadband upgraded to 2mg, four times my present speed. Am I correct in thinking that the settings will ave to be readjusted then?
Also if I do subsequently decide to uninstall the program will the registry settings revert to the original ones.

opto, ideally you should set your MTU to the best possible value by trial and error, and then calculate your RWIN (receive window) based on the average latency (transmission time) to the site you use the most. Some people spend a huge amount of time testing all of the various options and will become convinced that one particular value is best. The only thing is that everyone comes up with a different value even when on the same ISP. Any chosen value is by necessity a compromise and so I use 1500 and 38400. Any advantage gained by using a "better" value is only going to be a few percent, only on down/uploads rather than normal browsing, and only on some sites, making others worse. You are right that in theory the RWIN should be quadrupled if your connection speed quadruples, but there is doubt anyway as to whether setting it higher than 65535 is good or bad. No uninstalling Cablenut will not remove the settings as they are in the registry. However reinstalling it will clear the settings since the first thing the program does when run is to set them all to their defaults.

Just by coincidence after downloading an upgrade to cablenet I lost my internet access.....and after a lot of messing about, upon ringing Telewest I found out that they had a major problem in Yorkshire with broadband rendering service unusable in some instances, and mine was one of them!! Anyway things back to normal now thank G.
I like Telewest especially as they have just increased bill monthly bill by 3 :-)
