How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

I didn't manage to unload Derek completely today. Taking a small loss, unless he gets nominated which seems unlikely now.

Afternoon All,

Men's QF today. Not much value in backing Fed or Roddick. Missed out on Hewitt but some smart money seems to have gone on Nalbandian. Been watching the odds over the last 2 days. Bandy's odds have shortened from 1.73/74 to 1.67/68 whereas no change on others.

Johannson is the oldest in the qf line up and has surprised many by getting so far. Today will be a much tougher game against a better opponent.

I was mulling laying Federer for the match and backing him for the tournament. If there is a shock in the other qtrs then his price would come in a fair bit. If he wins then his price will come in anyhow.

bakko - 29 Jun 2005 14:51 - 3822 of 10502

It was interesting that all 4 of the favourites in yesterday's QFs came through in straight sets. You could slap on an amount, switch off, come back a couple of hours later and you're account would be better off! No need to trade at all!

I see that Fed and Hewitt are cruising at the moment.

Just traded out of Nalbandian who has been struggling in the 1st set. Too many break points against him.

Scripophilist - 29 Jun 2005 17:03 - 3831 of 10502

I've had a useless week on the horses for some reason. May take a break, been busy of late and may just be losing focus. Tennis has been good though.

Scripophilist - 29 Jun 2005 18:17 - 3832 of 10502

Plenty of money available on Johansson when 2-0 up in sets and serving at 40-15 @ 5-2 in the third. I dumped on 10k to cheer myself up.

Very strange to see money at 1.01 & 1.02 in that sort of situation. Will have to research if it really represents value.

bakko - 29 Jun 2005 19:08 - 3833 of 10502

Evening All,

Scrip, Well done on Johannson trade. It certainly paid off. I was on Nalbandian at the beginning and ended up on the wrong side for most of the 1st set. I've only got the radio to go by but it was very obvious that he was struggling so I got out as soon as there was an opportunity.

I'll send you an internal email later this evening.

Scrip

with regards to the horses im not sure its necessarily lack of focus - i have been thinking the same about myself with the horses.

Another possible theory is that a lot of the "regular" horses punters have been betting on the tennis instead so the money that has entered the market has entered it later.

Ive also wondered a couple of times this week whether someone is managing to put iceberg orders in the market - a few times one side of the book has just kept refilling time after time despite the weight of money indicating that the book should be moving. Complete speculation - wonder if youve heard anything.

See youre gambling on 1.01 shots - now we dont want to be laughing at one getting turned over when youre on it!!!

"Another possible theory is that a lot of the "regular" horses punters have been betting on the tennis instead so the money that has entered the market has entered it later."

The markets seem to be weaker and I was thinking a similar thing.

"Ive also wondered a couple of times this week whether someone is managing to put iceberg orders in the market"

When you see the charting in action you will see the weight of money is actually quite persistant. I have seen some odd movements but nothing outrageous.

Hi all,

The new API will allow us to see outside the three amounts to back or lay you normally see.

The question I have for you all is how would you like that information displayed? Obviously if you only had one selection on a screen that would be easy but more than one and suddenly things get more complicated.

Would be interested in your views.
