Off topic.

I don't want to start a new thread for one question.

A friend wants to find out how many hits various websites receive in a day.

Other than the blindingly obvious way of ringing them and asking, is there any other way of finding out this information?

I was thinking of an organisation that keeps some sort of check for advertiser verifiacation purposes, or similar.

Appreciate any replies as I can't think of anywhere where this information may be compiled.

brianboru - 10 Nov 2005 11:54 - 3836 of 11003

http://www.trafficranking.com/mainframe.htm collects this info.

it shows that Moneyam.com rank at 310,095 most popular in the world for instance. My own web site does not even show up even though it gets 500 hits a day!

Kayak - 10 Nov 2005 12:04 - 3837 of 11003

Andy, it may be as simple as him emailing his website host to ask to have stats enabled. Look in the information provided by the host and they may well provide the facility. Otherwise there are plenty of sites like Addfreestats although they rely on some HTML being placed on each page of the site.

Andy - 10 Nov 2005 12:23 - 3838 of 11003

brian, Kayak,

Many thanks for your help.

He's interested in finding out the hit rates of similar sites to the one he's developing.

I have passed on the trafficranking site details.

Kayak - 10 Nov 2005 12:32 - 3839 of 11003

Ah sorry I misread the question.

As well as brianboru's answer, if he using Windows 2000/XP he should be able to click 'related' at the top of his IE window and then 'avg. traffic ranking' to get Alexa stats. These services though can be wildly inaccurate though. They only measure the accesses by people who are careless enough to allow spyware onto their machines, which depending on the readership of the site can be a low or high proportion.

My Fuji digital camera has died and I'm looking for a replacement, however all the replacements use an XD memory card but don't I want to buy any new memory cards - will an SD card work in an XD camera?

Edit, just looked at some on the web and they're completely different :-((

ThePublisher - 16 Nov 2005 08:07 - 3841 of 11003

SC,

Memory cards drop in price all the time. I bought eight CF cards yesterday at half the price I paid a couple of years ago!

My advice is to find the camera that suits you and bite the bullet with regard to some new cards - may even be a bargaining factor with whoever you choose to buy the camera from.

If you decide to buy the cards separately I recommend Crucial UK. Based in Scotland. Good prices and fast service.

Thanks TP. Was coming round to that way of thinking, but it goes against the grain!!

I was about to sign on to AOL (dial up) when i got a pop-up saying that 'Rasautou' was attempting to sign me on.....i cancelled the pop-up and carried out a Spyware and virus scan but nothing was found.....anyone know what 'Rasautou' is? (I use Windows XP)
TIA

Spaceman - 16 Nov 2005 09:26 - 3844 of 11003

butane, I think that the autodialer trying to contact AOL to get more info. It should be safe. If your not sure try giving them (AOL) a call but my advice is dont use AOL ;-)

butane - 16 Nov 2005 09:33 - 3845 of 11003

Spaceman, Thanks.........I have only ever used AOL for the last 6 years which is when i first used the internet and have been very pleased with it, hence, i have no experience with any other provider, why do you not like AOL?

ps...i called the AOL helpline at the time and they said that it is spyware .....

Spaceman - 16 Nov 2005 10:22 - 3846 of 11003

butane, interesting that they said its spyware! from memory I though that was the RAS Auto dialler from Windows and many dial up sign up disks do dial up toy get connection info. Your right to be cautious as dial up users need to take more care as rouge diallers are a real pain and can end up costing money.

I suggest you do a spyware scan, if you dont have any spyware software Adaware Free and Spybot Search and Destroy are both pretty good and they are free.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with AOL in particular for people who are not technical and are not interested in technical things. I work in IT and like many others with an IT background I like to muck about with things and AOL does not like that sort of thing. In summary they have restrictions on use that I don't like.

PS you involved in gas by any chance?

Seymour Clearly - 16 Nov 2005 10:40 - 3847 of 11003

Butane, I used to use AOL a long time ago but gave up - nothing fundamentally wrong but they make you do things their way and trying to cancel used to be a marathon. Getting rid of the AOL settings used to be a nightmare. Before I finished with them I used to minimise AOL's browser once connected and use Internet Explorer all the time, thus using up precious memory resources unneccessarily.

butane - 16 Nov 2005 10:44 - 3848 of 11003

Spaceman,

I am not technically minded which is probably why i find AOL ok but i found it interesting as to your reasons for not using AOL.

I did use spybot and it found no problems.

Regarding 'Rasautou', the AOL helpline is a bit useless.....you talk to someone in India who doesnt seem to have a clue as to what the solution is and usually gives you a whole set of instructions to carry out that result in the problem still being present!...the guy i spoke to hadnt heard of rasautou and dismissed it as 'probably spyware'!

And Yes, i used to do work for BP........

Spaceman - 16 Nov 2005 10:50 - 3849 of 11003

butane,
Re AOL cant advice much more, sounds as though its a catch 22! maybe someone else who has signed up with them recently can comment. I dont have a mopdem any more or I wouold try it.

I am working for another big oil on a gas related project at the moment !

Sony to recall copy-protected CDs

" ... No detailed figures have been given by Sony for how many CDs are protected with XCP or how many have been sold.

However, work by respected net expert Dan Kaminsky found that more than 500,000 networks have at least one machine on them using XCP.

Although the CDs containing XCP were only released in the US, Mr Kaminsky found that 44,000 copies were installed on machines in the UK. .."

Now, how does he found out which machien in the UK has and has not got the software installed ???

ThePublisher - 16 Nov 2005 18:04 - 3851 of 11003

"Rasautou"

I always use Google when I find a file that worries me.

My quick glance at Google put my mind at rest. What do you feel?

Hi guys

A couple of what will probably be stupid questions but ones i cant solve - any help/advice greatfully accepted - TIA

1) the function keys on my keyboard do not work - i am guessing at some point i have inadvertently turned them off - is this possible? and if so how do i turn them back on - it is a wireless microsoft keyboard

2) i have loaded a new programme to my pc however when the program opens up rather than getting the proper log in screen (approx 5inches wide by 3 inches high) all i get is a shrunk down version which just has part of the blue toolbar name and the red cross to close the application. I cannot maximise this pop up and it is approx 1 inch wide by 1/2 inch high. This is effectively meaning i cannot use the programme.

For info I am running dual monitors on a Matrox G650 card, the font size is Normal and the resolution is 1024*768 (though changing this has no impact)

Kayak - 17 Nov 2005 19:44 - 3853 of 11003

Fundy

1. Check that the keyboard is correctly named in the System Devices, if not reinstall the driver for it.

2. Try dragging one of the corners of the window and see if they work to make it bigger.

Fundamentalist - 17 Nov 2005 21:08 - 3854 of 11003

Kayak

thanks
