How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Managed to back Craig for next eviction at 3.5 overnight. Bound at least to be nominated surely. Craig and Max is my best guess although as widely predicted Max is integrating more now that Saskia is gone. The nominations are day after tomorrow though, not much time to redeem himself...

Some great trading opportunities on the cricket today - shame im not trading (too hungover to have any chance of success)

jeffmack - 02 Jul 2005 16:57 - 3862 of 10502

Science has got to be nominated, probably with Maxwell

Would have been a great trading event except it finished in a tie - gonna be some unhappy traders unless they laid off on the tie market

bakko - 02 Jul 2005 18:59 - 3864 of 10502

What a farce!! Worked so damn hard on trading the cricket, green up with 3 overs to go and all bets are void cos it ended up a draw.

bakko - 02 Jul 2005 19:02 - 3865 of 10502

Just been checking the betfair cricket forum. There are lots of seriously p....d off punters there!

Fundamentalist - 02 Jul 2005 19:19 - 3866 of 10502

theres guys on there who have lost thousands because of what is fundamentally an awful rule. And those who say there is a tied match market to hedge on - there was over 7m traded on the match odds and only 20k on the tie market.

Also, the overall comp winner is being settled as a dead heat and the normal match voided as a tie - i bet theres a few arbers who have got seriously burnt

My favourite amongst the threads:

"I say we sue Ashley Giles"

"Nothing like an easy scapegoat"

bakko - 02 Jul 2005 19:28 - 3868 of 10502

With this daft rule in place then betfair has shot themselves in the foot by missing out on their share of the commission which at over 7m traded must have been quiet a sizable chunk

Fundamentalist - 02 Jul 2005 19:30 - 3869 of 10502

Be interesting to see what the volume traded is on thursdays match if they dont change the rule - see if people really are going to vote with their feet!!!

Dil - 02 Jul 2005 19:37 - 3870 of 10502

Seems fair to me , stood to lose a packet if England won and win a shedload if the Aussies won , neither happened.

I can see people being peed off if they had greened up but the only real alternative is to introduce odds for the tie.

Scripophilist - 02 Jul 2005 20:23 - 3871 of 10502

They introduced the tie market because of the fuss ties have always created. They even emailed the top cricket traders to ask for their views. So IMO they have done as much as they could. Happened plenty of times before.

I was on the womans final at Wimbledon and didn't have a bad day.

have to say i disagree with you - if the tie is a potential result then it should be in the match odds market rather than in a side market - it is in almost every other market (including test match cricket where the draw is in the match odds market).

Imagine trading the football where the match odds page only has say Arsenal and Southampton and then you have a separate market for whether the game is a draw or not

Scripophilist - 02 Jul 2005 21:29 - 3874 of 10502

I think the original rationale was that it was such a rare event it wasn't worth cluttering the market with a pretty much unused selection.
