THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Look at my comments on how inflation is presented these days.

Absolutely silly and misleading the public of this country.

cynic - 25 Mar 2014 20:54 - 38851 of 81564

38851 - maybe, but that may equally be just your (current) wishful thinking; they're arguments in both directions

38852 -has this been tampered with in any way within the last 12/24/36 months? .... further, even if the figure is not presented as you would wish to suit your political view of the month, what is the point you are allegedly trying to portray; that the labour gov't was frightfully good or somesuch or that they didn't leave the country in the most awful mess?

goldfinger - 25 Mar 2014 21:12 - 38852 of 81564

Ive said you twit labour also used it.

cynic - 25 Mar 2014 21:23 - 38853 of 81564

sorry old chap, but did not read further back .... was out from about 15:30

at least you're not claiming manipulation
i agree that there's all sorts of ways of measuring inflation and i certainly think that food and fuel and more arguably, mortgage costs should be in the equation
confess i always thought that food and fuel were, and it is incomprehensible if indeed they are not, as that leaves bugger all essentials

There was a chap from a building confederation on television the other day, he stated
that it will take 3 years from planning permission to the houses being completed . So with the the housing market in a boom and bust cycle, how on earth are building firms going to commit to building large amounts of housing. They are going to get caught out and left with building land and property. I have friends in a large scale building company that have sold whole sites with not even a brick in place yet.
On other sites the prices are going up daily . Foreign investors are buying up new developments.

READ my words Cynic.......

DUPLICATE.................

goldfinger - 25 Mar 2014 19:08 - 38846 of 38854 edit this post

Yep surely mortgage interest payments, food and energy should be at the core of any inflation figure. Instead we arent getting this and to me its downright lieing to the British public. Were being conned. Lets face it the core of most peoples salary/wage go on these 3 items but they arent included in CPI.

So just what is the real rate of inflation!!!!!! and when that comparison is done with salary/wage increases lets have the proper comparable figure. Not a fix, and this is not a political point scoring exercise I belive labour used exactly the same measures.

PATHETIC.

cynic - 25 Mar 2014 21:53 - 38856 of 81564

read mine too :-)
too late in the day; must check at some point just what is included to determine inflation

Had a laugh today, my friends Father who is a self made very wealthy man who is in his 80's and still goes to work every day tells cold callers when they ask him "Is that Mr. T or can I speak to Mr. T" "No he replies - he has gone to India/China or wherever for 6 years and I am looking after his house whilst he is away, goodbye". Will try that one the next time I get asked can I speak to whatever my name is. What a riot.

Anyone missing the video advert yet?

I see it is sharing time with other adverts, eg. two pleasant '.gif' type adverts from FirstShares.com - they are worth a read too.

3 monkies - 26 Mar 2014 09:25 - 38862 of 81564

I always say "I am not interested thank-you, good bye." I just thought my friends Fathers quip was hilarious - they certainly won't bother him for 6 years if they think he is away. Ah well, we all have different sense of humours which is not a bad thing. Have a nice day now.

There is a vote today on a benefit cap £120bn. The cap will apply at the start of a parliament an limit spending on benefits. What is interesting is that Miliband is supporting the measure although a few backbenches may rebel. It is a useful device for Miliband if he wins the election. He can say that his hands are tied and he cannot raise benefits.

Hmmm? I'm not so sure the callers from these outfits go away so easily.

Quite often you pick up the phone on an 'international call' and there is no one there. The line has been tested out with a robotic call. If a salesperson is available to talk to you then he/she is put through and if there isn't it's you who will hang up. Their calling overheads are very low and it's just a numbers game with names and numbers on purchased massive mailing lists.

I reckon we get about 1.2 such calls per day on average. Most days none. Occasionally two.

Yesterday, I did a 'Just a minute......' and got my dog to bark down the portable phone by holding it's collar and taking it with me and ringing the doorbell. The guy was 'asian' and said he was investigating as to whether I qualified for a 'government loan'.

Mostly, if it's an 'international call' we just use an 'up and down action' with the phone and its charger cradle.

ExecLine - 26 Mar 2014 10:17 - 38867 of 81564

Will they rescue this guy in time? Hmmm?

Fred1new - 26 Mar 2014 10:19 - 38868 of 81564

Why not say "very interesting hold on for a minute" and get on with whatever you are doing.

Replacing the phone after 20 mins.

Or even more simple B. off.

Haystack - 26 Mar 2014 11:44 - 38869 of 81564

The falling ratings of Miliband are looking similar to what was called the 'Kinnock effect' where Labour were on track to win the election and they lost to Major. The loss was put down to the lack of appeal of Neil Kinnock as PM.
