Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

CPI calculation
i had hoped to find a list of everything that went into this calculation, but was unable to do so
the nearest bit of useful info that i could find is as follows .....
Over the last five years, the three main contributors to the 12-month inflation rate have been food & non-alcoholic beverages; housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels; and transport (including motor fuels). Combined, these three sectors have, on average, accounted for over half of the 12-month inflation rate each month.
i think i am right in saying that mortgage costs are taken into account in the RPI calculation, which though a different calc, broadly follows CPI

The 'shopping basket' of items making up the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) and Retail Prices Index (RPI) are reviewed every year. Some items are taken out of the basket, some are brought in, to reflect changes in the market and to make sure the CPI and RPI are up to date and representative of consumer spending patterns.

Its not what goes into CPI its what doesnt go into CPI that is the main issue and it excludes Food, Energy, and mortgage costs.
How on earth can ANY government compare wage/salary inflation with CPI without these 3 basics added in.
More and more of disposable income is going on these 3 items above.
The way of calculating inflation should be changed.

StockMarketWire.com - UK consumer price inflation (CPI) for February slowed to its lowest level since October 2009, Office of National Statistics (ONS) data showed today.
ONS said CPI rose by a seasonally adjusted 1.7% in February, in keeping with market expectations and down from 1.9% in January.
Core CPI -- excluding food, energy, alcohol, and tobacco costs -- gained by a seasonally adjusted 1.7%in February, from January's 1.6% and slightly ahead of expectations for a rise of 1.6%.
The retail price index (RPI) lifted 2.7% in February, from 2.8% in January. The hike was ahead of an anticipated 2.6%.
ONS data also revealed that the house prices index (HPI) surged 6.8% in January, above an anticipated rise of 5.7% and from a 5.5% gain in December.

The wire news quite clearly states core CPI excludes food, energy and tobbaco and alcohol.............................and we already knew it excluded mortgage charges.
Tell hays to get updated research.

you, you're downright aggressive!
i have no problem at all in apologising, and i fully concur that it's absolutely nuts to exclude those key items even from "core CPI" whatever that may be, though perhaps it is the RPI we should be more concerned with, which apparently does include those items
by the way, orange juice and lemonade at lunchtime with no ice :-) .... and nor did i post or even allude or link muppets to CPI

maybe, but at least they had the bottle to fight it out on live tv, unlike the other two.
anyway, opinion says Farage won it by a whisker.
Call me Dave and the lesser spotted Millibandus will not be queueing up for a big one, cos either of the two tonight would wipe the floor with the pair of them.
