FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

et voila...

HARRYCAT - 12 Feb 2009 17:14 - 3893 of 21973

I agree. Nice to see FTSE doing its own thing without being overly influenced by the DOW movements. DOW looking a touch worrying though!

HARRYCAT - 17 Feb 2009 09:53 - 3894 of 21973

DOW futures looking a bit bleak at -143, which takes it down to 7636 level.
Remains to be seen if it takes the FTSE down with it.

tau - 18 Feb 2009 00:28 - 3895 of 21973

I agree HarryCat, with the DOW testing November lows within one range of 7453 this could be vey significant for global sentiment.

Went to the pub last night Goldfinger and bought a charity book on their shelf 'Gambling' by Mike Atherton, they have a chapter on your mate Evil Kneival and lots of historical ponzi schemes, quite a good read especially for 50p.

goldfinger - 19 Feb 2009 08:49 - 3898 of 21973

Hi Falc, I could write a book on the tales i could tell you about Evil.

Hes a real true blue tory but he takes the P out of the Royal Family.

I was there at his flat about 15 years ago when he flung a french letter full of water at prince margaret from out of his high flat window.

Hes a plonker at times, but he just doesnt care.

goldfinger - 19 Feb 2009 08:51 - 3899 of 21973

Mike Atherton aswell isnt he a bit of a gambler, ive heard that anyway.

Michael Owen is the worst.

HARRYCAT - 19 Feb 2009 08:55 - 3900 of 21973

Would be interested to see your gold research, Goldfinger.
Could you not paste it to a new thread titled GOLD?

goldfinger - 19 Feb 2009 09:20 - 3901 of 21973

dealerdear - 20 Feb 2009 12:30 - 3905 of 21973

Quite extraordinary market conditions.

Been trying to trade the FTSE but it hasn't really moved in the last 1 1/2 hrs (apart from the last few mins!)

HARRYCAT - 20 Feb 2009 12:32 - 3906 of 21973

DOW currently -104 which takes it down to the 7350 level. Not sure where the support level is.

dealerdear - 20 Feb 2009 12:35 - 3907 of 21973

-135 now!

cynic - 20 Feb 2009 12:47 - 3908 of 21973

oh hello old son ..... basking in the early feb sunshine in dubai (biz!) ..... my timing may be wrong, but i still rate SHP as a buy and still happy to be short WPP, and slightly anxious of same in ASC .... neither HOIL nor TLW can be bad buys either ..... WOS also looks to be collapsing again

dealerdear - 20 Feb 2009 12:50 - 3909 of 21973

Nottingham's not bad at this time of year you know ...

HARRYCAT - 21 Feb 2009 12:18 - 3910 of 21973

Following the trouble at Bank of America & Citibank, FT is now predicting a drop of up to 15% in the DOW & FTSE. Possibly time to take any profit & stick to solid defensive stocks.

ThePublisher - 21 Feb 2009 15:00 - 3911 of 21973

"FT is now predicting a drop of up to 15% in the DOW & FTSE."

Took me quite a time to find this FT prediction.

Then I saw that someone from Brewin Dolphin said the FTSE 'could' fall another 15 percent.

But, and I quote, he predicted that any such fall would be swift, and followed by a rise as buyers recognised that shares were priced at fair value.

Come on Harry. Tell us the full story!!
