ADAM......Thanks for your help. Yes it is a AMD Athlon XP 1700, one i purchased from Croc 3 years ago, been 100% reliable up to now.
It turns out the fault was in the main board, some of the capasitors around the CPU were faulty, it always did run fairly hot.
A new main board the only cure, so got a local guy fitting me one and upgrading
heat sink and fan.

Every problem solved seems to throw up another "challenge"..... :-)

Now have my wifi satellite link working like a dream but I have encountered a problem with my wireless keyboard when I'm working online. The wifi seems to upset the signal to the keyboard and it creates multiple characters on each key depression. (No problems at all with the wireless mouse I use.)

Is there some way I can shield the keyboard to stop the problem. The wifi is set directly from a USB socket in the laptop and the mouse/keyboard from a USB hub.

Any ideas?

I have a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse and have suffered similar problems. It is very unlikely that it is interference from your wifi. I just force the keyboard to re-register with the receiver by pressing the connect button on the receiver and then on the keyboard.

Any help for Internet explorer corrupted I have tried IE repair, and tried to reinstall and it still does not work, I am using Mozilla Firefox browser instead any ideas on how to fix it Windows 98 2nd edition.

Father-in-law has a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V2010 laptop with only 256 Mb memory and he's going to connect a 2nd monitor to it for trading. It desperately needs more memory but Fujitsu won't tell you how to install the new memory. I've tried taking the obvious slots and covers off to no avail. They say it's a dealer fit. Can anyone enlighten me - I've downloaded the full manual but no clues in there at all.

I'm a little surpised that the RAM slot isn't under one of the removable covers on the base of the machine as I believe most of them are.

I trade of a laptop (dell) and was able to add an extra 512Mb of memory without any problems at all although there are different types which are specific to each laptop dependent on how old it is.

I've also added a 2nd monitor witout any hitches and will be happy post up the setup instructions when you sort out the memory.

I have fixed my Internet explorer it wasn't corrupted after all, it was my firewall stopping it from working, its now OK after a few adjustments.

Thanks Bakko, no the memory is definitely not under a panel in the base. Have tried a second monitor on the machine without difficulty, so I'm OK setting that up thanks. The machine only has 256 Mb of memory, some of that's given to the graphics card, so adding 512 is going to make it useable. He doesn't really want to spend on a full 1Mb, bit over the top for the amount of trading he does.

I have a Gericom laptop that has just been away for a new hard disk but the fan is now making horriable noises. Its still under guarantee but to avoid the hassel of sending it away again for over a week does anyone know if its easy and cost effective to replace myself. Ta Graeme.

the bug from SP 2 has hit over the last few days-"Limited or no connectivity" on LAN.
Tried all the patches and Windows downloads- this is one BIG problem, nothing works on the LAN.
Any clues, this started last Friday, I even bought a new router/switch- that barsteward Gates wants his booolox torn off for allowing bugs in his "Service Packs", sells him more " fixes" I guess.

All Dell machines have the memory slot under the machine, but some Toshes you have to remove the keyboard and then a protective plate before you get to the memory.

Graeme, I looked into replacing the fan on someone's Sony laptop and it was a complete unit with a large mounting plate so it's likely to be a complex procedure - as is the case with laptops usually!

blinger - how do you know it's the fault of SP2? It's been around for so long now it seems unlikely to be the cause.

If anyone has the problem "Limited or no connectivity", and a general mix up in the LAN connections, I found that a program had sneaked in called "Newnet- whacking that cured all.I noted that an error message RUNDLL cannot find file xxx came up ref
Newnet.
All works now, google is full of fixes, mine took 4 days to find.

To all those who have had problems with connecting to the internet, I've just had a chat with a very helpful guy at BT who was letting me know about the fault I reported on Monday.

He said that several exchanges were being pressured to say they could handle 2mb and change their status from amber to green when the engineers knew they needed considerable new investment to genuinely qualify for 'green' status.

Nobody was going to admit this publicly, so the script from the helpline is always suggesting it's your computer/modem/software, when in fact, they all know jolly well, it's the local exchange struggling.

Everything working fine today..... but then I now have this guy's contact details. Should save hours of frustration contacting BT Broadband Helpline!

I have just realised that my C: drive is NTFS, whilst my others are FAT32 - Is there anything to be gained by changing the others to NTFS, assuming this is possible?
Am running XP Pro.
