Graeme, I looked into replacing the fan on someone's Sony laptop and it was a complete unit with a large mounting plate so it's likely to be a complex procedure - as is the case with laptops usually!

blinger - how do you know it's the fault of SP2? It's been around for so long now it seems unlikely to be the cause.

If anyone has the problem "Limited or no connectivity", and a general mix up in the LAN connections, I found that a program had sneaked in called "Newnet- whacking that cured all.I noted that an error message RUNDLL cannot find file xxx came up ref
Newnet.
All works now, google is full of fixes, mine took 4 days to find.

To all those who have had problems with connecting to the internet, I've just had a chat with a very helpful guy at BT who was letting me know about the fault I reported on Monday.

He said that several exchanges were being pressured to say they could handle 2mb and change their status from amber to green when the engineers knew they needed considerable new investment to genuinely qualify for 'green' status.

Nobody was going to admit this publicly, so the script from the helpline is always suggesting it's your computer/modem/software, when in fact, they all know jolly well, it's the local exchange struggling.

Everything working fine today..... but then I now have this guy's contact details. Should save hours of frustration contacting BT Broadband Helpline!

I have just realised that my C: drive is NTFS, whilst my others are FAT32 - Is there anything to be gained by changing the others to NTFS, assuming this is possible?

Provided you don't use Windows 95/98, NTFS is a much better and more reliable file system so you should certainly change over to it. Look up NTFS conversion in Help.

Advice please. My old psion 5 organiser is beginning to creak, touch screen getting quirky. Now my phone (sony t610) screen has packed up. Seems like time to get a handheld PDA? I don't use the phone much and pay as you go tarrif will be fine, I don't want video messaging. I do want my diary and contacts and easy sync with my laptop. Any recommendations gratefully considered. TIA

There was was an error while loading the plug-in "Accessibility.api". The plug-in failed to initialize.

This happens on trying to open any pdf file (eg. this weeks edition Shares magazine).
I have tried downloading latest edition of Adobe Acrobat Reader but am told I already have it.

desperate das: Frustratingly, there's nothing I can do except liaise with BT Broadband. Today the line is working and stable but yesterday I had no internet connection whatever. The fault is definitely somewhere in their system, so nothing I can do.

These problems with ADSL on marginal lines have been discussed extensively here, I know people dont want to hear that its just not going to be reliable in some areas but that is the case.

You may well be better off getting downgraded.

Has anyone on here upgraded the memory on a Vaio laptop? I've had a look at the precise instructions Sony give and have been told to press in three places at the top to release the keyboard and swing it out over the touchpad.

However, I can't work out which way to push when I've got my fine screwdriver down the slot. The instructions and the reality seem to be different!

Spaceman: the manager from my exchange wouldn't agree the answer is as simple as you suggest. He says if the 2mb line worked fine for several weeks without incident and then suddenly started dropping out, creating an intermittent fault, then the line is stable enough to take 2mb but there's something else wrong.

Not enough 2mb customers have complained about their internet connections to make it a simple matter of downgrading the lot of us. He reckons some human has been messing about in the exchange!

P he could be right in your case, a lot of others are just using lines with to much loss. This can be variable as well the sypmtoms are exactly as you describe. However doing things like replacing old wires may help.

I'm having intermittent connection problems. My wireless router has a solid adsl light and a blinking staus light. Connection by modem instead seems to work fine. I assume I have a duff router? Will a reset improve things? TIA

I have changed my desktop wallpaper on xp, now the icon text is invisable how do I change just the desktop icon font colours so I can read them if the background is white ? ;-)
