How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

It's all down to Paris or London

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 11:41 - 3917 of 10502

Certainly is, I think the issue at hand is that Paris went for it to get the 2004 and 2008 games so I think most IOC members feel Paris deserve it. Great market to trade.

Piptrader - 06 Jul 2005 11:42 - 3918 of 10502

Phew!

bakko - 06 Jul 2005 11:45 - 3919 of 10502

Pip, I felt that here!

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 11:46 - 3920 of 10502

Not 100% sure where this is going now. Immediate reaction to the last two was for the price on Paris to come right into 1.20's but has since drifted right back out again. Can't wait for the final decision at 12:45.

Piptrader - 06 Jul 2005 11:48 - 3921 of 10502

lol Bak:-)

Traded out of Spain for a small profit and will put the rest on France.

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 11:51 - 3923 of 10502

Traitor!

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 11:52 - 3924 of 10502

I thought Betfair would tidy up the market but they haven't so I just bought back my lay on Spain. Currently mulling what to do. Just offering up prices on both at the moment for a few quid.

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 12:19 - 3925 of 10502

Just looked at the Steven Gerrard to stay market. Hilarious stuff. I keep thinking that on all unusual markets the best tactic has to be lay the red hot favourite.

Funniest comment on betfair regarding the olympic market:

"I can't believe people are stupid enough to still be playing this market with no inside knowledge"

Do you think he works for endemol? ;~)

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 12:28 - 3927 of 10502

LOL!

It still amazes me that insider trading is frowned on in capital markets but in the gambling market its practically accepted. I am sure this will change. There are some professional horse owning syndicates that are at best highly questionable. Any body 'investing' in these deserved to get fleeced if only on moral grounds!

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 12:30 - 3928 of 10502

Volume is picking up on the Olympic market. I will be recording the odds at a high refresh rate for later analysis.

Scripophilist - 06 Jul 2005 12:45 - 3929 of 10502

I'm all green ahead of the result. Good luck UK!

Kayak - 06 Jul 2005 12:49 - 3930 of 10502

LOL. What was that about laying the favourite? :-)

DocProc - 06 Jul 2005 12:50 - 3931 of 10502

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
