Carney: Rates could rise before general election
03 Apr 2014 | 08:07
Mark Carney said UK interest rates could rise before next May's general election if there are continued sustainable improvements in the economy, according to a report.
The Bank of England governor told the Northern Echo he does not rule out a rate hike before the election next May.
However, Carney (pictured) called for a improvement in the labour market in the North of England as well as the South before such a decision can be made.
"The point is that if a recovery is just based in the South-East it is neither sustainable nor balanced. It has to include the North-East, we are here to make policy for the UK as a whole, " the Governor said in the interview.
Carney recognised an interest rate hike would be unpopular with mortgage payers, but said a hike in interest ratesshould be seen as a "welcome sign" the economy is recovering after a difficult period.
He stressed the hike would be gradual, despite the quick pace of the recovery in the UK compared to other European nations.
"We will set policy as appropriate to meet our core responsibility to meet the two per cent inflation target," the Governor said.
"We have been as explicit as we can about the nature of adjustments to interest rates, but we cannot be specific."
Carney also called for banks to act more professionally in order to improve their public image.
He said: "Banking needs to be treated more as a profession. We also need to improve infrastructure, both in how markets are organised and the codes of conduct behind markets."

Talk about a government of double standards.
I wonder what an unemployed individual who over claim an allowance or benefit by "mistake" would have received for his/her "MISTAKE".

Irish police are investigating whether a gangland bomber accidentally blew himself up after he forgot about the clocks changing for Daylight Savings Time while he was planting a bomb.
Police are hunting for a man who fled the scene “dripping in blood” after a bomb exploded in his face while he was apparently trying to plant it under a Volvo SUV in the densely populated New Street and Clanbrassil Street area.
“His entire face was covered in what I thought was blood, but now know were severe burns,” a witness told the Irish Examiner.
“It would appear that the bomber got his timings wrong,” a police source told the Mirror. “It could be a case where he didn’t put his watch forward on Sunday and the timer went off too soon.”
A man has since been admitted to Mater Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries to his face and upper body, the Belfast Telegraph reported. The police are waiting to interview him.

That is a great story. I saw it last night and we were laughing for ages.
It is a "have you heard about the Irish bomber who forgot about the clocks changing" type of story.

I do hope Maria Miller is going to pay the cost of the enquiry into her actions.
I think in that she was said to obstructive and held up the enquiry she should pay the costs.
Why should the public who Cameron while purporting to protect the tax payer have to pay for her actions.
DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Maria Miller should have been sacked.
Her actions were a disgrace when found with her hand in the till.
Sources say the only thing stopping her from getting the chop was that Camoron only has 4 women in his cabinet and didnt want to lose another one.
Pathetic Dave, just replace her with another women or is that too much for you to grasp.

An interesting theory to think about!
MH 370 >>>>>>>>>
Beleive it.....Or.....Not. ??
The Americans are withdrawing from Afghanistan; one of their command and
control systems (used for controlling pilotless drones) was hijacked by the
Taliban when an American transport convoy was moving down from one of the
hill-top bases. The Taliban ambushed the convoy and killed 2 American Seal
personnel, seized the equipment/weapons, including the command and control
system which weighed about 20 tons and packed into 6 crates. This happened
about a month ago in Feb 2014.
What the Taliban wants is money. They want to sell the system to the
Russians or the Chinese. The Russians are too busy in Ukraine. The Chinese
are hungry for the system's technology. Just imagine if the Chinese master
the technology behind the command and control system, all the American
drones will become useless. So the Chinese sent 8 top defense scientists to
check the system and agreed to pay millions for it.
Sometime in early Mar 2014 the 8 scientists and the 6 crates made their way
to Malaysia thinking that it was the best covert way to avoid detection. The
cargo was then kept in the Embassy under diplomatic protection. Meanwhile
the Americans have engaged the assistance of Israeli intelligence and
together they are determined to intercept and recapture the cargo.
The Chinese calculated that it would be safer to transport it via civilian
aircraft so as to avoid suspicion. After all the direct flight from KL to
Beijing takes only 4 and half hours and the Americans will not hijack or
harm a civilian airliner. So MH370 is the perfect carrier.
There were 5 American and Israeli agents onboard who were familiar with
Boeing aircraft operation. The 2 "Iranians" with stolen passports could be
among them.
When MH370 was about to leave Malaysian air space and report in to
Vietnamese air control an American AWAC jammed their signal, disabled the
pilot control system and switched over to remote control mode. That was when
the plane lost altitude momentarily.
How the AWAC can do it ? Remember 911 incident ? After the 911 incident all
Boeing aircraft (and possibly all Airbus) are installed with a remote
control system to counter terrorist hijacking. Since then all Boeing
aircraft can be remote controlled by a ground control tower. The same remote
control system used to control the pilotless spy aircraft and drones.
The 5 American/Israeli agents soon took over the plane, switched off the
transponder and other communication systems, changed course and flew
westwards. They dared not fly east to Philippines or Guam because the whole
South China Sea air space was covered by Chinese surveillance radar and
satellites.
The Malaysian, Thai and Indian military radar actually detected the
unidentified aircraft but none reacted professionally.
The plane flew over North Sumatra, Anambas, South India and landed at the
Maldives (some villagers saw the aircraft landing), refuelled and continued
its flight to Diego Garcia, the American Air Base in the middle of Indian
Ocean. The cargo and the black box were removed. The passengers were
silenced by natural means, lack of oxygen. MH370 with dead passengers took
off again using remote control and crashed into South Indian Ocean to make
it look that the plane eventually ran out of fuel and crashed.
The Americans have put up a good show. First diverting all the attention and
search effort to the South China Sea while the plane made its way to the
Indian Ocean. Then they came out with some conflicting statements and
evidence to confuse everyone.
The amount of effort put up by China, in terms of the number of search
aircraft, ships and satellites, searching first the South China Sea, then
the Malacca Straits and the Indian Ocean is unprecedented. This shows that
China is very concerned, not so much because of the many Chinese civilian
passengers, but mainly for the high value cargo and the 8 defense
scientists.

Nigel Farage should be excluded from TV election debates, says Ed Miliband
Labour leader calls for repeat of 2010 debates involving three main parties, saying: 'I am not that interested in Nigel Farage'

Nigel Farage should be excluded from the television debates before the general election next year, Ed Miliband has said.
As Nick Clegg licked his wounds following his second consecutive defeat at the hands of the Ukip leader in their televised debate on the EU, Miliband called for a repeat of the debates involving the three main party leaders in 2010.
Asked during an appearance at the Guardian whether he would include Farage in the debates if he were in charge of drawing up the rules, the Labour leader said: "No. Look, I think the format we had last time with parties that have representation in parliament is a good format. In the end it is for the broadcasters to decide who they invite. They have got their own rules and they have got to follow their rules. I look forward to debating David Cameron. I am not that interested in Nigel Farage. I care about debating David Cameron."
Miliband said that reviving the so-called "three by three" debates – three debates involving the leaders of the three main parties during the three-week general election campaign – was the best way of guaranteeing their survival. He said: "The big challenge we are going to have in relation to the leaders' debates is getting all three leaders into a debate. David Cameron is desperate to avoid having these TV election debates because all of the conventional wisdom on the Tory side is that they didn't do him any good last time. He will try and do anything to avoid these debates. That is why we have said: we had the debate with three leaders last time, same format – three debates, three leaders – let's have that. If the broadcasters want to invite other people that is a matter for them. But I think our best chance of getting Cameron into the debates is to say we are going to have the same format as we had last time."
There has been speculation that Cameron will try to avoid the 2010 formula, and possibly kill off the debates altogether, by changing the format. This could include holding debates before the formal election campaign. Some of Cameron's advisers believe the debates in 2010 undermined Tory attempts to present their candidate as the fresh face of British politics because Nick Clegg performed strongly.
Ukip has been declared a major party by Ofcom for the European parliamentary election campaign in light of its number of MEPs and its strong showing in polls. This means the broadcasters have to give Ukip the same treatment as the other major parties.

The Prime Minister is being lobbied by senior Conservatives who want him to ban the 59 Scottish constituencies from taking part in the election if Alex Salmond wins the referendum in September. The exclusion of Scotland could determine the next government.
In 2010, Labour won 41 Scottish seats, the Lib Dems 11, the SNP 6 and the Tories just one. If the 2015 election is close, restricting it to England, Wales and Northern Ireland could make the difference between having a Conservative or Labour Prime Minister.
