all walks of life are full of dodgy characters, and parliament in all its hues is of course not immune

in this instance, my gripe is not so much that MM tried to work the system and patently overstepped what the rules allowed, but that the parliamentary committee then only tickled her with a derisory fine

that cameron should have suspended if not sacked her from the cabinet as soon as her "misdemeanour" became apparent is a separate issue, and is (imo) a no-brainer, but i do not intend to open up the silly paths of righteous indignation that are so prevalent here

I didn't think, because I though I was underpaid, that I could nick money out of till, or made a false claims, and explain the THIEVING away because it was practised by others.

I would also have expected to "prosecuted" or at the least reprimanded and punished in one way or another.


Having the leadership accept the corrupt standards that they have done and are continuing to do and not being punished for the misdemeanour's and holding high office encourages "society" to copy their actions and behaviour.

That leads to a "rot" percolating through a society.

What is commonplace for other countries or others does not mean it should be accepted in the UK.

As far as a non-elected upper house is concerned, it is liable to become another
"old boys" club, similar to the present cabinet and is more likely to be open to "old friends" arrogant tolerance of corruption.

At least with a periodically elected upper house, the public can at least a chance of ridding themselves of "failing" individuals as when the public thinks fit.

Personally, I see some advantages for co-opting a certain number of "special advisers" to the upper house. (On an Experience or Knowledge bases and perhaps as representatives of professional, or other areas of the public.)

(Safe guards would have to be put in to regulate number and "power".)

A black box locator onboard a Chinese ship searching for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane has detected a signal from a location in the South Indian Ocean, according to reports.


Tthe Haixun 01 vessel reportedly picked up the "ping" at 25 degrees south latitude and 101 degrees east longitude.


It is yet to be determined whether the signal is related to the missing flight MH370 of the Malaysia Airlines, the report from China's official state media said.

David Davis said quitting the EU would be a 'revolution' and would spur growth



The Tory revolt over Europe took a dramatic turn last night after senior Conservative David Davis called on the Government to open talks with Brussels on quitting the EU.


Former Tory chairman Mr Davis tore into David Cameron, accusing him of making a mess of his pledge to win back powers from the EU.


‘Scaremongers’ who said Britain would collapse if it decided to go it alone were talking nonsense, said Mr Davis. Quitting the EU would be like a ‘revolution’ and would boost UK jobs, wages, world power, arts and prestige, he added.


Significantly, his intervention comes days after two televised political debates in which anti-EU leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage, crushed pro-EU Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.


And it will spark claims that Mr Davis is turning himself into a Tory version of Mr Farage, ready to exploit the leadership crisis Mr Cameron would face if UKIP makes big gains in next month’s Euro elections.


Mr Davis, who was beaten by Mr Cameron in the 2005 party leadership contest and who is a former Minister for Europe, writes in today’s Mail on Sunday: ‘Exit from Europe is not something to be afraid of. Some of the greatest growth spurts in history have occurred after revolutions: this would be a revolution of expectations and ambition.’


Britain should quit the EU or force Brussels to make massive concessions, he says.
