When using my laptop (XP home & IE6) I keep getting an annoying pop-up "This page contains both secure and non-secure items..." on Moneyam.

I don't get it on my PC running Windows ME & IE6.

Is there any way of disabling this?

Mouse/pointer problem. Using the mouse is becoming increasingly difficult, it doesn't move cleaning across the screen and now I can't get it to come above the bottom of the screen. Two new mice do the same thing and so does the laptop's tracker nodule etc....am I doomed ?

I have a laptop running on windows xp and the sound and speakers work ok, when i plug in mike/headphones for use on msn i cannot speak to or hear anyone, i have run the audio wizard etc which indicates the mike is working ok but there is a problem somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas please to rectify the problem,

I'm having a problem with desktop icons, I'm able to move them about / click on them etc. in the normal way but whenever I restart or reset my computer the icons will not hold their previous positions but get shuffled around, predominately to the left hand side and the bottom of the screen.

No other known problems
Windows 98
3 monitors, all 800 x 600

problem first occured while messing about installing third monitor and a matrox card, however reverting to two monitors and 2 PCI cards now does not cure the problem.

SECURITY..problem in need of help.

I am completely ignorant on this topic..the very reason probably why I am worried about drawing down e-signal/any RT data feed until I can find an anti-hacker way to do it!

I have been told that you can purchase some kind of box for circa 300 that sits between the internet and your computer. Does anyone know about this and is it effective?

It occurs to me that if you tunnel your data from a desktop, which interfaces with the internet directly, to another/laptop (otherwise offline), then it should be anti-hacker proof. I say this on the assumption that for someone to get into your computer and steal, they need to get back out again. So, if you only have an input electric current and no output/backfill current, then the hacker has a real problem with no feedback/carriage return. Is that correct or have I missed something here?


Croc pointed out at the last seminar on L2 at LSE that 90% of all SETS executions are computer driven. What kind of security do those guys use? None is clearly not the answer..:>)

I recently purchased a new machine.

My old one had an AOL 56k subscription on it but I didn't want to install AOL on the new one. However, I did continue paying my AOL subscription and thus was able to continue checking and replying to any of my AOL e-mails on the web site facility. I also recently went to the US and my enquiries revealed that one could easily acquire an AOL "Free" disc at most big stores suitable for use with my loaned laptop.

In my hotel room, duly armed with my US version AOL "Free Trial Disc" I proceeded to load it into the laptop to use a 56k modem on the phone line. At the point of entry of the Username and Password, well, naturally, I entered my existing UK Username and Password so as to be able to check my e-mails. (This might have been my big mistake!)Anyhow, all went well and the disc and AOL web site facilities provided by it enabled me to find a local 56k dial-up number to use and a few back up numbers too.

To cut a long story short, instead of my usual 15.99 AOL debit, I find they have charged me an additional 74.83 of "communication surcharges*"!!!

They say: * "A Communication Surcharge" is a charge incurred for logging on to AOL outside the UK or Sweden. These charges vary from country to country. A full and complete listing of all communication surcharges for each respective country can be found at AOL Keyword: Global."

Now a big chunk of the AOL Help stuff requires you to "load up the AOL disc" and this might be why my surfing hasn't yet been able to find this AOL "Global site. I don't want to do this on my desktop machine as I really do want to keep it "AOL -free".

Before I plug in the loaned laptop to use it on this quest (which is not at my home), I wonder if any of you can help?

1. Can someone provide me with the URL for AOL's Global listing of communication surcharges?

2. Can someone quickly explain how to cancel with AOL? Is there a phone number to ring? Or do they thoil you and make you load up the AOL disc and do it online? Is there a URL which is OK to use to cancel your AOL subscription with?

DocProc, cancelling with AOL I seem to remember is a pain, you have to ring up. They usually have someone at the other end trying to persuade you to keep going, may even offer you a free month, I managed to get two free months before finally cancelling but that was a long time ago, may be different now. Can't help with the other (Global bit) though.

I'm using a machine today which only has the Microsoft works version of spread sheet software, is it possible (cos I can't find it) to import external data into this?

I have got a bizzare problem this morning.
I can lauch my Internet Explorer and it sits on the bottom task bar
but I can not physically open it although its clearly logged onto the
default home page.
Tried right-click and restore but to no avail - help..

Horst,

Try Control Panel/Add Remove programs. Find Internet Explorer and click the Change/Remove button. One of the options presented will be "Repair Internet Explorer".

If that fails, go to www.windowsupdate.com and download the latest service packs/updates, that usually cures this sort of thing.

Check your anti-virus software is up to date, in case there's a nasty on there causing it!

I finally figured what was wrong after following your advise but did not solve it.
I have a multi-screen setup via a matrox card with 3 monitors.
For some reason 1 (master) 4 & 5. It turns out that for some reason monitor 2 got installed and subsequently the browser opened itself into this "new" monitor. So, the browser opened a normal but on Monitor 2 which seemed for me to disappear into nowhere. Now I have deleted this setup (monitor 2) again it seems to work as before.
This really had me snookered for a while!

I am trying to uninstall Windows media player version 9.Ive gone to add remove and deleted,Still comes up.
REGED and removed file. Still there!
Programme files, deleted folder.Yes! Its still there.
It will not display video for some reason. Says there is a codec error.Ive tried re-downloading it with no sucsess.thats why I want to delete it and start again.

Buy an applemac machine you just DO NOT have these sort of problems,it was the best move I have ever made,no more blue screens,get the odd spinning beachball of death, but you can just forcequit, fire up the browser and carry on surfing.
You will never reget the move.
