Fred1new - 06 Aug 2007 15:55 - 402 of 1427

I'm trying to get something similar going in Bristol - but its proving difficult to rouse much interest.

What sort of response of you had so far and do you have any tips as to how to encourage people to ome along?

Good luck in the meantime

Pete

Mindseye,

The first meeting of ours consisted of Stan, myself and the Barman.

The Barman new more about betting than we did and probably more about shares.

But with perseverance we have got to the grand total of 4 on one occasion.

Many say they would like to have such meetings but have their own reasons for avoiding them.

The meetings we have had have been enjoyable and if we got to about 6-10 regulars could be informative and useful. I think all of our meets have provided something useful to think about, even if it was the bar maid and the beer.

Perhaps a short program of points to review would be useful, ie, Fundamentals and Charts and the usual "tips" to avoid.

You could offer free beer, I would attend then, but only if somebody would drive me home.

Good luck I hope more will attend our next meeting:

14.00 WEDNESDAY 15th AUGUST 2007 ( that is this year)

at the :

The Old Joint Stock (Pub)
Temple Row
Birmingham

(Opposite the Birmingham Cathedrals entrance.)

Havent seen 55011 for a while.

He tipped me MCRO, I dont know if that was the reason for his noted absence.
I have put my life savings on it. So I would like to see him again.

Have a look at RBS, EZJ. I thought yesterday I had been stupid but much relieved to see todays movement.

I can now afford a new tyre for my bike, so will arrive on wheels.

Regards

Perhaps, Shares magazine could provide a little information about such meetings.

Thanks for that - there was only 3 of us too including the bar staff too - although I have to confess the barman didn't give me much to think about. We were expecting a 3rd and we kept accosting evryone that walked into the pub rather hopefully - but I suspect we just came across as desparate :-)

I have to walk everywhere at the moment thanks to EZJ - but its nice to see them on the rebound.....

Good luck with the next meet - if Birmingham was nearer I would definitley attend. Maybe if we organised a National event we might hope to get 5 or more attend....

Good luck

Well, there should certainly be enough beer at the Old Joint Stock for a while ....
About 40 kegs had been unloaded from a Fullers truck and were 'waiting' near the side entrance of the pub this morning ....

See you next week .....

Stan - 08 Aug 2007 11:49 - 410 of 1427

minseye,

3 seems to be our limit and when you look at the size of the West Midlands that does seem a daft number, I just think it's typical of middle England in general these days.
Anyone who has tried to organise an event will know what I mean.

In actual fact 3 or 4 isn't a bad number to keep discipline with, seems to work reasonably well.

... and whilst on the subject (of beer):

"CAINS BEER

Although the Cains Beer Company is not well known outside its native Liverpool, it has been brewing there since 1850. Cains posted maiden results this week following June's reverse takeover of the struggling pub group Honeycombe Leisure. In a world of bland, uniform beers, Cains Finest Lager really is a bit different it is brewed using only the most expensive hops. Cains' other beers have also won numerous awards. This is early-stage investment and high-risk but Cains' strength is its product, and for daring investors this looks well worth backing. "

Stan - 08 Aug 2007 12:27 - 412 of 1427

Yep, I did note them from the other week, they had dropped back though from 28p to about 19p the last time I looked...one to keep an eye on thought!

mindseye - 08 Aug 2007 12:40 - 413 of 1427

Stan

An interesting web-site - thanks

survived87 - 08 Aug 2007 14:13 - 414 of 1427

Yes, an interesting site. Note that you can register on it (to do reviews) at age 16!

Also 'interesting' is the review of the Old Joint Stock concerning food being thrown across the table by the staff to the customer(s)...

Stan - 08 Aug 2007 14:15 - 415 of 1427

Yes I noticed that, they (the staff) are a bit that way -):

Pity about the lack of suitable parking at The Barton Arms as the service there is excellent even when they're short staffed.... and the great value Thai food there goes down well when accompanied by JHB. Not much info on The Poachers Pocket (in Kitts Green) - that 'suffers' from similar 'problem' to Barton Arms - old building has character, beer is good, food is good - but location that has built up around it isn't 'ideal'.

Notice the pub I first drank real ale at (The Junction Inn, St.Denys) has excellent reviews. However, the pub that holds my fondest memories doesn't appear to be around anymore. If anyone reading this knows what happened to The Southerner near Bargate in Southampton can they please post a reply?

Stan - 08 Aug 2007 16:02 - 417 of 1427

Only been to The Barton once but agree a fine place for most things social.

"Birmingham Pubs
Birmingham has a wealth of classic pubs, with a strong emphasis on those built during the Victoria era. These vary from a simple corner local to the splendid opulence of the Bartons Arms. Here, we present a selection of Birmingham's best.":
