Site outage 19th January 2008

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 19 Jan 2008 22:54

All,

Our hosting provider had a power failure at their data centre resulting in every machine hard powering off. We'll be speaking with then to find out what on earth happened as they're supposed to have redundant power supplies from different providers and multiple layers of UPS systems in place!

Computers don't like being turned off like that, and unfortunately when the power was restored, a couple of them needed some TLC before they were in a position to be put back in production; this resulted in the extended outage you saw today.

However, everything's now restored, and I've given the site a run through. If you happen to see anything that's not working which was working yesterday, please post below and I'll investigate the cause.

Thank you for your patience and you have our apologies for any inconvenience today's outage may have caused.

Well done, Jonathan. It'll be interesting to find out where the single point of failure was (and on the Boeing 777 ;-) Or, as pilots say, perhaps all the holes in the Swiss cheese just lined up.

Richgit69,

I made some changes to the load balancers configuration early this morning which should have resolved the issue of not being able to connect to the streaming services.

It's probable that you'll need to empty your cache before hitting the streaming server page again, else you may have problems downloading the applet.

MM, Its interesting its a power problem, the company I work for has extensive arrangements for power including dual supplies and multiple layers of UPS, however nearly every time we have a power failure (most often cause by builders cutting underground power) we end have a full failure with subsequent failures to our redundant systems failing to cope, and its not that we havnt sized them correctly or that they are broken.

I have a feeling that power is the greatest remaining problem for redundant datacentres although with the technology available this should not be the case.

We have these problems around the world so its not just a UK issue.

I think its needs a bit of SPC or kaizen !

My stockwatch is not working. There is a blank screen. Could you look into it. Thanks

Dunno about holes in cheese; might've been planetary stuff so you shold've called Lara Croft or something.

Peter123,

Please can you clear your cache and try hitting the page again as I can't see anything wrong with streaming at the moment. I've just logged onto my watchlist and prices are displaying (streaming and HTML).

I've also just knocked up a quick script to check all the streaming services, from a user's perspective, and it's reporting no problems.

Please post if you continue to have problems.
Jonathan.
