A new non-java Stockwatch is ready to try out - Technical Beta Test

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 07:42

As I'm sure you are aware, we and many of you have had a long and tiresome battle with Java when trying to use our streaming services. We have therefore been working on a solution to remove this problem.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new stockwatch available for use which no longer uses Java. We are currently making this available as a technical beta version, which means we are interested in your feedback regarding performance, bugs and browser/operating system/device compatibility issues (note: design and styling will be addressed in later beta releases).

For the purpose of allowing the old and new stockwatch versions to run concurrently, the technical functionality of the new stockwatch mimics the old one for now (not style, fonts or look). Editing and managing watchlists uses the same process as the current java stockwatch but is now at the top of the page. This will allow you to switch between the versions should you have any problems. All technical features of the current stockwatch are available in the new version except for the ability to drag resize columns. In the near future and as we migrate away from the java version of stockwatch, we will add new usability features as well as design it up to make the whole stockwatch experience smoother than it has ever been.

As this new version does not require java, you should expect it to work on your android devices and ipad/iphones. For now the display has not been optimised for smaller screens, but this will come in future development.

NOTE: Due to javascript performance in Internet Explorer 8, this new stockwatch can cause high CPU load. We recommend you use a current version of a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for best results.

The new version can be found on the following link:

http://www.moneyam.com/stockwatch/beta.php

NOTE: Non java versions of streaming trades, streaming news and level 2 will be released over the coming weeks.

Please do not worry about design/style at the moment as this version has not been styled it is purely a technical beta test environment it will be styled before it is released. We have put this here purely for feedback on its technical functionality i.e does it work in your browser and on your PC/Laptop/Tablet/Mobile

Please post your technical feedback in this discussion thread

Thank you for your feedback and we hope you enjoy it

Ian,well the Java message has not been a problem thus far so it looks as though its a major break through in reliability.

Hi Greystone,

We didn't include the non-streaming link because essentially what that did was take you to an HTML version of stockwatch, and, although this one ticks, it is just an html version of the stockwatch. Potentially we could add functionality to stop and start the streaming. What are you trying to achieve with the non-streaming page?

skinny, how did you add the stock? are you sure about what you did, because I can't replicate this problem.

skinny - 29 Jan 2014 09:31 - 7 of 734

George - I haven't used the functionality for ages, so am not totally up to speed.

I opened the link and it took me to my world indexes watchlist, I then added HWDN to it and that is was all that appeared in the list - the previous contents were gone!

I've now added BT.A and only it and HWDN are in the list.

George (ex MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 09:46 - 8 of 734

skinny, were the other items in the world indexes watchlist still valid stocks and were they ticking before you edited the list? I wonder, possibly if they were not valid, maybe they were automatically removed when you edited the watchlist.

skinny - 29 Jan 2014 09:47 - 9 of 734

Yes they were indexes and updating when I opened the list.

Greystone - 29 Jan 2014 09:52 - 10 of 734

George - I use the non-streaming stockwatch feature so I can get a snapshot of
prices at a precise moment in time.

George (ex MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 10:02 - 11 of 734

Greystone - that's what I thought. You know that you can select, copy and paste from the new stockwatch and will get the the values at that time, but we can add a pause feature to stop the streaming if you want to make sure it's not ticking.

martinl2 - 29 Jan 2014 10:20 - 12 of 734

Very quick, and appears to work

martinl2 - 29 Jan 2014 10:22 - 13 of 734

Do you have a non-Java version of the trades screen?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 10:23 - 14 of 734

martin - as per the header Non java versions of streaming trades, streaming news and level 2 will be released over the coming weeks.

jimmy b - 29 Jan 2014 10:32 - 15 of 734

Doesn't fit on my screen like the java version ,can only see half of it.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 10:38 - 16 of 734

jimmy,

the new version will align to the left not the centre - I presume that is what you mean by not in line?

with regard to it not fitting on your screen, you cannot current resize the columns and this may be pushing things out for you compared to the java one. for example if you have the full names of the shares as a column, that will at this point be particularly large as it cannot be resized.

Ian, Trades Screen opens from IE9 and is populated, but remains empty in Chrome.

jimmy b - 29 Jan 2014 10:43 - 18 of 734

Yes with the old version i can see the whole page ,with this i can only see up to the column Trd/High ,unless i move the bar at the bottom .
If so how do you take the full names out of the column ??

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 10:47 - 19 of 734

jimmy,

just click on the edit this watch list button to the top left and you can take out any columns you want from there.

sdunwell, is taht the same when you are using the current stockwatch as the new one trades is still a java page and as such chrome may not like the applet

sdunwell - 29 Jan 2014 10:53 - 20 of 734

Ian, I normally use Chrome and Trades always works, it's only when I select Trades from the HTML-5 version of Stockwatch that no data appears in the Trades screen.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 10:56 - 21 of 734

sdunwell, thanks for that,

ian

jimmy b - 29 Jan 2014 11:31 - 22 of 734

Ok got it now Ian thanks .
It's a shame the name boxes are not a little smaller as then you wouldn't have to eliminate them.

George (ex MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 11:35 - 23 of 734

jimmy, you can reorder the columns and move name to the far right.
