Eckoh out of the red
ECKOH Technologies has been through a series of changes in recent years, but with its restructuring complete, the company has some appeal to investors.
Formerly called 365 Corporation, it came to the stock market at the height of the internet boom in 1999 as a website content company, though it also had a phone information services arm. It raised 50m in the float to fund expansion and marketing, and its shares soared 62% higher on the first day of trading. They peaked at 302 1/2p in March 2000, valuing the company at 537m.
But when the technology investment bubble burst, Eckoh's shares followed many others downwards. At Friday's close of 11p, the group is valued at 22.7m. But while it might still carry the stigma of the internet boom, Eckoh is now focused on telecoms.
Its main operation is a voice-recognition business that enables customers of its clients, which include Centrica and William Hill, automatically to access information and services on the phone. Turnover grew 75% to 2m last year, with gross margins rising from 38.2% to 45.9%.
Eckoh has been lossmaking, but in the six months to 31 March it produced a maiden profit of 200,000.
Because of its small size, the board has recently moved its listing to the Alternative Investment Market from the main market.
• Midas verdict: There are still plenty of doubts about Eckoh, which means it is a speculative investment. But its move into profit, its lack of borrowings and a cash pile of 12m all support our buy recommendation.
