By Ruth Berry, Anne Beston, Derek Cheng and Ellen Read

The Government is bracing itself for the international reaction to what is believed to be a foot and mouth hoax.

Agriculture Minister Jim Sutton said last night the suspension of meat exports by some countries was a real possibility.

The crisis was triggered by a letter sent to Helen Clark that claimed the disease had been deliberately released on Waiheke Island.

Nervous eyes will also be fixed on the New Zealand dollar today as international markets continue to respond. The dollar dipped almost half a cent when news of the possible outbreak hit brokers screens late today.

Westpac senior currency strategist Johnathan Bayley said "spooked" overseas investors were the main sellers and there was a distinct possibility the kiwi would trade lower overnight as the news spread around the world.

Mr Sutton said overseas trading partners had been contacted. He would not be surprised if "one or two countries" imposed an export ban, but he hoped most would accept officials view that the scare was a hoax. "

strong US Retail Sales expected? so positive for dollar?
but imports component weak on yesterdays deficit figures.
So appears contradictory.
Dollar strength first?

Made a few cable points on the way down. Now looking to reverse - possibly 8-O

mg - 12 May 2005 08:29 - 4018 of 11056

Oooops, forgot I had placed a buy order for overnight @ 650 - which has now been triggered. So long and nervous.

Maggot - 12 May 2005 09:04 - 4021 of 11056

I have just been requoted by cmc on Cable - a 1 upbet when the chart was quite placid - ie no spikes etc! Can't remember that happening before.

Cloudbase - 12 May 2005 09:18 - 4022 of 11056

Maggot..... yes i've had a CMC requote on forex, 2 in 2yrs i think so not
too bad. You will get requotes from spot forex platforms if the price moves
before they execute, so all in CMC reasonably fare in forex.

Maggot - 12 May 2005 09:31 - 4023 of 11056

Cloudbase. Is there any advantage in using other platforms to trade forex rather than CMC? I've not seen how they work - is it like direct market access using a CFD so you can get the other side of the spread? To be honest although I've looked at the adverts etc there's so much jargon it completely throws me. Anyway, have taken 23 pts from a Cable short this smorning and just now 7 from a long at 58. Am tending to get better using spreadbets - placing fewer bets, more considered, puttin in an oco, and moving it off the screen so I'm not tempted to watch it all the time.

Sitting short 665 and waiting for it to break one way or the other.

mg - 12 May 2005 10:48 - 4025 of 11056

Out of my long for 30 - feels a bit dodgy - and diversions mean I can't watch

chocolat - 12 May 2005 10:57 - 4026 of 11056

Been dodging up and down all morning. 1 more minute to close my last trade and off for a soak :)

hodgins - 12 May 2005 14:01 - 4027 of 11056

wow!
approaching bottom 3 yr daily uptrend and sitting on bottom of hourly, 5 minute downtrends.
Turn? 1.8610

Cloudbase - 12 May 2005 16:48 - 4028 of 11056

Maggot.....Sorry to take so long to reply, work got in the way.
No the spot forex platform does not give you direct access, the only way to
get that on forex is using the futures. I personaly think CMC are ok for forex
and at least you don't pay tax with them, you've just got to accept the odd
re quote, and as such i don't see any advantage in using other platforms, other people may have different views.

Maggot - 12 May 2005 16:57 - 4029 of 11056

Thanks, C.
