Brian, Ian,

Most new machines do not have AGP slots anymore, so it will probably depend on what make it is.

I made the mistake of buying a new machine ripping off the warranty sticker to get in it to replace the cards only to find out there wasn't a slot and then couldn't take it back!

As I have multiple monitors I will have to continue building my own from scratch which is a pain.

Iain - 14 Feb 2006 17:37 - 4124 of 11003

This is the motherboard model
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-VM400 Rev 2.xx
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 3.00 07/30/2004

There are available slots on board
ps.Do I get an agp or a pci card

brianboru - 14 Feb 2006 19:28 - 4125 of 11003

Iain - I believe an AGP 8 (1.5v) card will be OK - even something as lowly as

128MB Sapphire Radeon 9250 AGP
22.84 ex VAT, 26.84 inc VAT

Internet Explorer 7 (Beta) was launched by Microsoft on 31/1/06.

The new release can be downloaded by anyone and no beta program membership is required.

New Interface
Say goodbye to bulky toolbars. Internet Explorer 7 has a new interface that shows more of each webpage you visit. The streamlined toolbar makes it easier to add websites to your Favorites, search the web, clear your history, and access the other tasks and tools you use most.

Optimized Design
The new design, including consolidated menu items, smaller icons, and an overall decrease in toolbar height, optimizes the space on your screen so you see more of the websites you're visiting.

Favorites Center
The new Favorites Center makes it even easier to manage your favorite websites, your browsing history, and your RSS feeds with just a few clicks.

Tabbed Browsing
Whether you're searching the web, comparing prices, or just staying on top of your favorite topic, Internet Explorer 7 lets you view many different websites at one time all within one organized window.

How to Use Tabbed Browsing
Launch Internet Explorer 7 and your home page opens in the first tab. To view other sites at the same time, just click the new tab button in the toolbar and then type the address of the site you want to visit in the address bar. Your home page stays open in the first tab.

Close Tabs
Closing tabs is as easy as opening them. Just click the close button that appears on the right side of the selected tab.

Quick Tabs
When you have several tabs open, use Quick Tabs to find the site you want to view or to close sites you're no longer interested in viewing.

Search
Internet Explorer 7 brings your favorite web search providers to you. With the built-in search box, you can search the web at any time without having to open a search provider page. You can display search results in a separate tab, and then open the results in other tabs to quickly compare sites and find the information you want. You can even customize your search by setting your favorite search provider as the default.

The Power of Multiple Search Providers
You can choose which search provider you want to use as your default and then compare its results with those of other search providers by choosing another search provider from the list. You can also add search providers by selecting "Get Search Provider" from the dropdown list.

RSS Feeds
Don't waste time checking many different sites and blogs for updates. Just select the sites or topics you care about and Internet Explorer 7 delivers all the new headlines and updates to your Favorites Center.

Security
Internet Explorer 7 helps keep your information safe by alerting you to potential phishing sites sites that look legitimate but actually are designed to capture your personal information. It's also easier to see which sites provide secure data exchange, so you can shop and bank online with confidence.

Security
At a glance you'll see whether the site you're visiting has a valid secure sockets layer ( SSL) certificate or if there are irregularities in the certificate information. Phishing Filter warns you of suspicious sites that might attempt to collect your personal information.

Peace of Mind
And while you browse the web, Internet Explorer 7 automatically monitors your computer to protect you from unwanted and malicious programs that can be installed on your system as a result of surfing the web.

NB. It being a new programme, there are obviously a few problems being experienced (eg, "locking up"). You can get a general idea of what problems are being experienced at a User Forum HERE

Sounds just like Firefox :-)

DocProc - 15 Feb 2006 10:01 - 4128 of 11003

I started with Firefox and do like it. However, I do run my machine's activities on the Internet from 'History' quite a lot and was disappointed to find that History for Firefox doesn't include History for IE6 and vice-versa.

I had just about concluded how you just have to make a clean break and decide to use one or the other.....so....which one? Hmmm?

.....and then along comes IE7.

ADAM - 15 Feb 2006 11:37 - 4129 of 11003

Looks very much like Firefox and is pretty, but it has trouble loading some pages and seems to have to learn each page.

It also validates your version of Windows, so those with hooky copies beware!

MightyMicro - 15 Feb 2006 21:22 - 4130 of 11003

And don't forget that Opera is now free and, IMHO, is a very good browser indeed. Its tabs occupy less screen real estate than Firefox. And I do like the way Opera remembers where you were on various sites . . .

Get Opera Here

MM,

I'd also endorse Opera. I met it in my Psion 5 days as a memory economic browser. And then introduced it to my PC's as Netscape got subsumed in its own size.

My one concern, and this could be because I have not the right plug-ins, is that it does stumble on some interactive sites such as PayPal. I seem to remember that it did not like the Level Two screens supplied by those other guys across the road.

It also needs third party software if you want to introduce your bookmarks from something like IE - but there are pointers within Opera as to what is on offer.

scussy, it should work easily even with the drivers provided with Windows. Are you connecting it via the parallel socket? When you say it doesn't work, what happens?

Seymour Clearly - 16 Feb 2006 22:10 - 4134 of 11003

Scussy, I've an old laserjet 6p which I connected up via the parallel printer port and it was recognised by XP straight away without installing any printer drivers.

scussy - 17 Feb 2006 11:47 - 4135 of 11003

when i used it on my PC,win XP picked up the printer and drivers and the printer worked ok,
this is not happening to my DADs pc the only diferance is i am on XP PRO and he has XP HOME,
yes using the parallel socket,i can see the printer in the control panel,it just don't want to print.

brianboru - 17 Feb 2006 12:36 - 4136 of 11003

Double click on his printer and make sure there's nothing stuck in the print queue - if there is delete it.

Seymour Clearly - 17 Feb 2006 13:09 - 4137 of 11003

I used XP home and it was picked up OK.

Kayak - 17 Feb 2006 13:52 - 4138 of 11003

Go into printer properties and check that the options have been set ok, particularly the port as LPT1, and that the printer queue isn't paused. Presumably you've checked the printer is actually showing its ready light and not jammed etc...

ThePublisher - 17 Feb 2006 15:17 - 4139 of 11003

"I'd also endorse Opera"

Just spotted that they have launched a version for the Pocket PC.

I'm damned if I can get it to load.

scussy - 17 Feb 2006 15:19 - 4140 of 11003

nothing in print queue and is not paused, printer set as devault and to port LP1,
printer is switched on and there is no jam, iam scratching my head on this one,

is winamp still the best for sound playing CD's.

thanks

steve

Kayak - 18 Feb 2006 22:21 - 4141 of 11003

What does it do when you print to it? If it doesn't give an error as such you ought to be able to open the print queue before sending something to it and see it spooling and then printing to it in the queue window. If you can see it printing and the ready light on the printer isn't blinking on and off, then I would say the likely suspects are either a duff cable (or badly inserted at either end) or a duff motherboard.

MightyMicro - 18 Feb 2006 23:47 - 4142 of 11003

TP:

I hadn't noticed the Pocket PC version of Opera -- we're doing quite a lot of work on Pocket PC at the moment on another project -- I'll see if I can check out Opera on there.

MM
PS: I'm still using a Psion 5 as my Personal Organiser -- I'm just a sweet old-fashioned thing!
