THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

i'll be fully with goldfinger on the subject. But then again there is lack of sensible respect on our planet overall.

The success of UKIP will, I believe, will turn out to be good for the Conservatives. As the GE approaches people will see that UKIP cannot give them any chance of a referendum on the EU. At that point they may well switch back to the Conservatives including those Labour voters who voted for UKIP. The anti immigration feeling is strongly linked to a referendum because without leaving the EU we cannot stop immigration.

If we get a Labour government, immigration will just increase. The Libs won't win the election and UKIP certainly won't. So if you want to curb immigration then vote Conservative. The Conservatives have been unable to reduce immigration much because they are in a coalition and the Libs block many Conservative policies.

The older parties don't know how to respond to Ukip.

Sounding like human beings might help

That's Robot Nick Clegg Looking Sad on the right, in case it isn't clear

If there is one fundamental truth of today’s election results, it’s this: none of the older political parties know what to do about Ukip. That’s because they don’t really know why Ukip is advancing.

A lot of politicians, both Conservative and Labour, think this is about policy. They argue that people are voting Ukip because they are unhappy with the policies adopted and implemented by the bigger parties.

That was the official Tory case put by Michael Gove today, when he argued that Ukip supporters are angry about Europe and immigration will have their demands satisfied by the Conservatives:

"For those people who voted Ukip today, the best assurance that they have of their priorities being secured is through a Conservative government at the next election defeating Labour; David Cameron giving people the referendum, the in/out referendum on our membership of the European Union that many people want; and at the same time Theresa May cracking down on immigration."

The rest of the story and a vid is here:

Read the comments to get a feel of what people really think.

cynic - 23 May 2014 18:58 - 41303 of 81564

does anyone have any idea as to % turnout at these elections?

we know ukip has done well, even if only by spoiling the party, so to speak
on the other hand, labour really haven't performed, which says a lot about EM's total lack of public appeal

what i really don't know is how badly have the tories actually done
sure they lost seats, but that is always the case with the incumbent, but is the loss of <200 seats really such a bad result?
my gut feel is that it is not

sensible and relatively apolitical responses would be nice :-)

Full list here, you'll have to sort it tho :-(

edit: no turnout figs.

Haystack - 23 May 2014 19:39 - 41305 of 81564

BBC latest estimate is 36% turnout.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:41 - 41306 of 81564

Cynic how do you mean Labour havent really peformed the bookies were using a spread as low as 150 seats.

They have done far better than that.

In the end they came with a late run and the transfer of seats from Tory to labour in London was a real boost.

The real losers now its over are the Tories.

Haystack - 23 May 2014 19:44 - 41307 of 81564

Labour have done badly. They should have got at least 400 to have a chance of success.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:45 - 41308 of 81564

In fact this was the best result of the day........

Labour is jubilant over the capture of Hammersmith and Fulham, which it described as “David Cameron’s favourite council”, from the Conservatives.

If they can beat the torys on this ground Milly should be telling the troops they can win them everywhere.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:48 - 41309 of 81564

Hays talking s-ite again.

The tories have a diabolical result on their hands.

Only 2 winners UKIP and LABOUR.

Camoron and the boys are already panicking thinking of an alliance with UKIP, but UKIP dont want it.

Fred1new - 23 May 2014 19:48 - 41310 of 81564

Didn't the tories do well.

Fred1new - 23 May 2014 19:48 - 41311 of 81564

Didn't the tories do well.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:53 - 41312 of 81564

Yeah Yeah Yeah, more more more more FRED is back.

Look out manuel.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:56 - 41313 of 81564

Set fred set fred....set.

goldfinger - 23 May 2014 19:56 - 41314 of 81564

Hope you had a good holiday Fred.

Haystack - 23 May 2014 20:23 - 41315 of 81564

If you add UKIP to the Conservatives you get over 50% as a centre right group. If the UKIP voters support the Conservatives and a referendum then there will be a large majority for the Tories,

cynic - 23 May 2014 20:24 - 41316 of 81564

gordon bennett!
i was hoping for some intelligent comment and not just the usual partisan polemic ..... clearly far too much to hope for

=============

sticky - what care i what bilge fred posts; i read little of it; nor yours come to think of it .... it's all just so goddam predictable, as is that from hays

cynic - 23 May 2014 20:30 - 41317 of 81564

for reference, i have just picked up the following and i can't be bothered to look up the source ....

• Election results:
• Ukip + 132 as Tories demand pact
• Labour + 273, fall short in middle England
• Tories - 147. 'Fire Shapps' demand members
• Lib Dems - 222, lose Kingston
• Farage: "Ukip fox is in the Westminster hen house"

==============

is crowing by labour as sticky propounds? ..... doesn't sound like it
and what of the tories performance? .... can't tell from the above

MaxK - 23 May 2014 20:31 - 41318 of 81564
