How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Edward, You are really going to love the next two modules as well. We are busy testing them at the moment and will release them soon. They have been pretty complicated to write so we are being careful about putting them through their paces before we release them.

I hope there's still a vacancy on the course too, Scrip. I've just fired off an e-mail to Sarah at Glom for a place.

:-)

Back England ... two Welshmen still to bat.

For the tennis enthusiasts, the US Open starts today. See link below for the draw, live scoreboard, etc

US Open

Once again Federer is the overwhelming favourite and odds have shortened considerably overnight due to Safin pulling out with a dodgy knee.

Regarding the Brits, Henman is in dire form (when has he not been?) since Wimbledon, having only won 1 match! However, laying him for this one is not feasible as at 500s, you'll need a margin the size of a lottery jackpot.

Rusedski, on the other hand, is in remarkable form having won an ATP title and reached the semis of 2 others over the last month or so. He has a tough draw in the 1st round against Blake who won a tournament over the weekend. If he overcomes the 1st 2 rounds then he's potentially up against Nadal in the 3rd round!

Finally, Murray is drawn against the veteran Pavel, having had to win 3 pre-qualifiers despite a shoulder injury.

Happy trading on the tennis!

Hi Bakko, on Federer to win, all favourites flop sometime but not this one just now(I hope). also on M Schumacher to win Italian GP at 10+ which I think may not reflect Ferraris desire to win in front of home crowd so may be fastish in qualifying when I hope to green up since they havent got much chance for the race.My Italian banker came thro again this weekend at Brno! just amazing.

bakko - 29 Aug 2005 18:58 - 4257 of 10502

Pericles,
If you're going in for Federer I'd wait till he at least gets into the 3rd round as his odds won't move much till then unless one of his nearest rivals crashes out.

I agree with you that Fed just doesn't look like losing. He's simply on another planet but his odds are just too short to make it worthwhile lumping big amounts at the outset.

Must thank Serena W for giving me a winning start to the US Open!

pericles - 29 Aug 2005 19:37 - 4258 of 10502

Bakko, thanks for the advice on Fed.Im on that already but will watch it next time, well done on Serena, meanwhile heres one of my banker!

Currently experiancing the perils of back an event under-round. Several times during the ashes the series market has been under-round but because the event is not completed yet Betfair have only settled those events that can not happen. As a result my P&L looks terrible but I have made profit, just no yet. There must be a better way to settle these markets.

Free money!

Special bets, UK, Top summer temperature. Forecast is for 29c tomorrow the last day of this market. People are laying off 1.01 at the moment so unless there is a huge spike in temperature tomorrow to over 34c your bet is safe.

Scripophilist - 30 Aug 2005 20:35 - 4262 of 10502

I'm covered up to 97f so I should be pretty safe!

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 09:31 - 4263 of 10502

Plently available this morning, Looks like some are bailing out and offering up to 1.04 to exit their position.

Fundamentalist - 31 Aug 2005 09:45 - 4264 of 10502

Scrip

may be because it is forecast to get into the 90's today

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 09:50 - 4265 of 10502

You can easily cover yourself to 97f in the market this morning. I have an additional 10k in there all matched this morning.

compoundup - 31 Aug 2005 10:04 - 4266 of 10502

I don't have the conviction that 94f won't be broken. In fact I couldn't stop myself backing 26 to 1 for a couple of quid that it would :-)

Edit - I've changed my mind and I'll risk another 4% that it will :-))

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 10:33 - 4267 of 10502

It sounds like you and I have traded then as I have been sweeping up the money on <94f and covering on >94

compoundup - 31 Aug 2005 10:51 - 4268 of 10502

FWIW at 10:45 am it is already 25C / 77F on my max/min external thermometer in darkest Gloucestershire ;-)

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 11:13 - 4269 of 10502

27c just SW of Heathrow

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 11:13 - 4270 of 10502
