How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Free money!

Special bets, UK, Top summer temperature. Forecast is for 29c tomorrow the last day of this market. People are laying off 1.01 at the moment so unless there is a huge spike in temperature tomorrow to over 34c your bet is safe.

Scripophilist - 30 Aug 2005 20:35 - 4262 of 10502

I'm covered up to 97f so I should be pretty safe!

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 09:31 - 4263 of 10502

Plently available this morning, Looks like some are bailing out and offering up to 1.04 to exit their position.

Fundamentalist - 31 Aug 2005 09:45 - 4264 of 10502

Scrip

may be because it is forecast to get into the 90's today

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 09:50 - 4265 of 10502

You can easily cover yourself to 97f in the market this morning. I have an additional 10k in there all matched this morning.

compoundup - 31 Aug 2005 10:04 - 4266 of 10502

I don't have the conviction that 94f won't be broken. In fact I couldn't stop myself backing 26 to 1 for a couple of quid that it would :-)

Edit - I've changed my mind and I'll risk another 4% that it will :-))

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 10:33 - 4267 of 10502

It sounds like you and I have traded then as I have been sweeping up the money on <94f and covering on >94

compoundup - 31 Aug 2005 10:51 - 4268 of 10502

FWIW at 10:45 am it is already 25C / 77F on my max/min external thermometer in darkest Gloucestershire ;-)

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 11:13 - 4269 of 10502

27c just SW of Heathrow

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 11:13 - 4270 of 10502

I think the peak will come around 4pm

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 11:57 - 4271 of 10502

Panic seems to have set in on the markets, now at 1.14. The book keeps going underround as well, I am having a great time over here.

WOODIE - 31 Aug 2005 12:02 - 4272 of 10502

scrip what is underround?

Fundamentalist - 31 Aug 2005 12:06 - 4273 of 10502

Scrip

thanks for the heads up on this

Woodie

underround is where the total martket adds up to less than 100% so if you back every event in the right proportions you will show a profit

100% = perfect market
>100% = margin in favour of layer
<100% = margin in favour of backer

compoundup - 31 Aug 2005 12:10 - 4274 of 10502

...and now <94 is coming in again - this is fun

WOODIE - 31 Aug 2005 12:11 - 4275 of 10502

thanks for info

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 12:14 - 4276 of 10502

Started at 1.01, went out to 1.14 and now back to 1.06.

28c and steady over here.

Fundamentalist - 31 Aug 2005 12:16 - 4277 of 10502

Appear to be quoting a max of 32C which is just under 90 on boith met office and beeb sites. Managed to take some at 1.10 and trying to get some more at 1.09

Scrip - is that you laying off at 1.07?

Fundamentalist - 31 Aug 2005 12:17 - 4278 of 10502

Filled at 1.09 :-)

Scripophilist - 31 Aug 2005 12:30 - 4279 of 10502

I'm square other than over 97f

As the day progresses the odds should shorten as the temperature gets more certain.
