THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

'Smart meters’ to be put in every British home despite fears they may not work

The £11 billion Government plan to put ‘smart meters’ into every British home will be launched this week

7:22PM BST 06 Jul 2014

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/10949976/Smart-metersto-be-put-in-every-British-home-despite-fears-they-may-not-work.html

The £11 billion Government plan to put ‘smart meters’ into every British home will be launched this week despite fears they may not work and could open the national grid up to cyber-terrorists.

The meters, which are being introduced to meet EU green targets, will cost households £200 each in an effort to cut down energy consumption and reduce bills.

However official documents have shown that the meters save less energy than predicted and five other countries who had been considering the plan have ditched it after deciding it could cost more money than it saves.

Due to complex technology the metres will also not work in a third of British homes including rural houses, high-rise flats and basements.

Energy companies will begin the installation of smart meters next year at a cost of at least £200 per home, and have admitted the expense will be passed on to customers.

Sir Bob Geldof is launching the publicity drive and will be paid for his role in the campaign.

Smart meters work by recording gas and electricity consumption every 30 minutes. The metres are linked up to monitors called In-Home Displays, which show customers how much power they are consuming at any one time and how much it is costing them.

The Government hopes that having access to this real time information will encourage families to alter their energy use accordingly.

However the gas and electricity meters transfer information wirelessly using a communication hub called ZigBee which does not work in buildings with thick walls or in multi-storey flats.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has estimated the technology will see bills fall by £26 a year by 2020 and cut electricity usage by 2.8 per cent and gas by 2 per cent.

However an early study of 743 Dutch households found users consumed only 0.9 per cent less gas and 0.6 per cent less electricity.

A risk assessment carried out by the energy watchdog, Ofgem, has also identified ‘"a range of threats such as cyber, viruses and malicious software."

Margaret Hodge, the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said: “This is a typical Government project – they set up a big scheme but don’t think about the costs to the consumer because it’s being driven by the energy companies.

This expensive equipment is already
out-of-date, because we could get the information on our smartphones.

“The Government should really think about the technology they are

using and make sure that the consumer benefits.”

MrT - I always but always vote, so I support whichever party I feel is least worst ..... that said, I can think of perhaps a handful of politicians for whom I would vote regardless of their allegiance

in fact, my constituency is a long way from marginal, so my vote is relatively inconsequential

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 13:46 - 43294 of 81564

bob Geldof a druggie family telling me our to live. what a bloody joke
the man used famine to make is millions that is why he is rich getting thers to give money while he made money out of it .

if my energy company comes to fit one I will not allow them and if forced to have it put in will turn off the power ever night and ever time I go out then switch supplier
I do not want one do not need one .my human rights they keep on about I will take it to court or just have no energy .only via a generator

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 13:47 - 43295 of 81564

Geldof a man who could not even tell is family anything to save their lives

cynic - 07 Jul 2014 13:48 - 43296 of 81564

for no good reason, I really do not like that man either ..... sure as hell would NOT vote for him regardless of his allegiance :-)

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 13:48 - 43297 of 81564

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 13:50 - 43298 of 81564

bob Geldof used the starving to make money .druggie family telling good people how to live what a bloody joke the uk as become the man is evil

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 14:05 - 43299 of 81564

energy control can not find out who the directors are or which MPs family are pushing for them . who is making money from these s/m

cynic - 07 Jul 2014 14:12 - 43300 of 81564

simple smart meters are fine, for they cut out the need for anyone to come round to read your meter

if these new fancy meters have a stack of other functions, which may or may not work, then for what good purpose?
racing certainty that consumption will be cut, but only for a very short time, and then people will pretty much revert to where they were

if these meters cost £200 each, who will pay for them?
one way or another the consumer will of course!

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 14:29 - 43301 of 81564

cynic . I e mail my readings to BG and have for the last 3 years very easy simple
have been with bg for 44 years if they fit one will move

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 14:30 - 43302 of 81564

how do they work when I turn the supply off which I do regular ever time I go away

cynic - 07 Jul 2014 14:32 - 43303 of 81564

I do mine on line too, but the premises I own in London already had a simple smart meter and that works a treat, and I sensible

fancy, bells-and-whistles meters sound a waste of money to me with little or no benefit to the consumer

Haystack - 07 Jul 2014 14:46 - 43304 of 81564

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the smart metres are a result of EU directives on carbon usage and fuel saving requirements.

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 14:51 - 43305 of 81564

yes another reason to vote UKIP GET US OUT OF EUROPE NOW

goldfinger - 07 Jul 2014 14:53 - 43306 of 81564

Blame David Cameron for the catalogue of Conservative lies 7/july/2014

David Cameron, now.

This makes sense. Look at Iain Duncan Smith, who has loudly and continually fibbed his face off about his so-called “welfare reforms”, in spite of the mountain of evidence showing that tens of thousands of people have died because of them.

That is as discriminatory as a law can be.

Commenters on this blog, in their multitudes, have asked why Iain Duncan Smith has remained in his post after setting in motion the sequence of disasters that have hit the Department for Work and Pensions on his watch. Looking at the Scott/Major affair, we can deduce that the man we call RTU has not been ‘Returned To Unit’ (in this case, the backbenches) because he has been doing exactly what David Cameron wanted – victimising the disabled in the worst possible way.

What does this say about Cameron, whose own late son was disabled? Cameron claimed all the disability benefits he possibly could, before he became Prime Minister and ordered RTU to cancel them or change their eligibility criteria so that almost nobody could legitimately claim them.

Recent stories show that RTU is still victimising the disabled while his reaction to criticism is becoming increasingly unbalanced.

Meanwhile, Cameron has to answer for multiple offences of his own. Most recently he lied about waiting times in the English part of the National Health Service, but this article also highlights his false claim – in a party political broadcast – that the Coalition was “paying down Britain’s debts”, and the false claim that spending on the NHS had risen in real terms since the Coalition took office.

What conclusion can we draw from this? It’s obvious, really.

Your Conservative-led Coalition government has been lying to you. It is lying to you now. It will lie to you in the future.

This is not in the national interest. How can it be in the national interest for the government to pass laws that harm the disabled – and to pass laws that could harm the sick by delaying medical aid – and then lie to you to keep you quiet?

It is ideologically-motivated cruelty. Nothing more.

It will continue as long as your vote supports it.

TANKER - 07 Jul 2014 15:04 - 43307 of 81564
