Referendum : to be in Europe or not to be ?, that is the question ! (REF)

required field - 03 Feb 2016 10:00

Thought I'd start a new thread as this is going to be a major talking point this year...have not made up my mind yet...(unlike bucksfizz)....but thinking of voting for an exit as Europe is not doing Britain any good at all it seems....

England’s hope of winning the Euro 2016 football championships were thrown into turmoil last night after it emerged that French and German Uefa officials were poised to file a legal petition suspending England from the competition if Britain votes to leave Europe on June 23.

The motion, which would also impact Wales and Northern Ireland if they clear the group stages, would cast the three home nations into a legal limbo just days before the start of the Round of 16 on June 25.

“Solidarity is a core principle in Europe, and this is true in the great game of football no less than trade or politics,” said Jurgen Loos, the former German central midfielder who is spearheading the Franco-German proposal, “If Britain leaves, then we should be clear: ‘out’ means ‘out’.”

Draft legal documents seen by The Telegraph – which are due to be submitted no later than April 1 - also set out contingencies for dealing with angry English fans whose Euro 2016 tickets and EU passports will be automatically invalidated when UK-EU borders slam shut at 00.01 on June 24 in the event of Brexit.

Yuro Baloni, spokesman at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, declined to comment until the petition had been formally filed, but sources said that the plan had gathered sudden momentum after England’s stunning 3-2 win over Germany in Berlin last weekend.

The Franco-German proposals drew a furious reaction from pro-Leave campaign groups such as ‘Leave Go’, the group that has now overtaken ‘Vote Go’ and ‘Grassroots Boots’ as the organisation most likely to be designated to lead the Brexit campaign by the Electoral Commission in the coming days.

“This is yet another shameless attempt to rig this referendum,” the group said, “It is now clear that voting to ‘Leave Go’ of Europe on June 23 is the only way to ensure England wins back the World Cup in 2018.”

Football has shown in the past its power to swing UK election results: Britain’s shock quarter-final loss to West German at the 1970 World Cup was widely blamed for Harold Wilson’s equally shock defeat at the general election four days later.

A spokesman for ‘Britain Bigger and Better in Europe’, the pro-Remain group, said the Uefa plan was a foretaste of the chaos Britain faced if it left the EU, adding that voters had been given yet another reason to “think very carefully” before stepping through the exit door.

“Anyone who thinks Uefa referees will treat any of the home nations kindly after a vote to ‘leave’ on June 23 is deluding themselves,” a spokesman added, “we’ll be shown the red card the first chance they get, guaranteeing German dominance for years to come.”

A good reason for staying in the EU.

EU states point finger over Tata and anti-dumping tariffs

Britain blocked attempts to strengthen EU trade defences against imports of cheap Chinese steel that have devastated Tata’s operations in the UK, according to senior European officials.

French and Italian officials said Britain had led opposition to an overhaul of anti-dumping rules that could have helped raise retaliatory tariffs in the EU to the tough level seen in the US.

The head of the European Steel Association, which represents every steelmaker on the continent, also said Britain had thwarted attempts to shut out cheap steel from China.

“The UK is the ringleader in a blocking minority of member states that is preventing a European Commission proposal on the modernisation of Europe’s trade defence instruments,” Axel Eggert told the Financial Times.

I wonder why?

grannyboy - 01 Apr 2016 15:07 - 437 of 12628

Just because camoron and the rest of his Pro europhiles stimmied the possible raising of anti dumping Tariffs on Chinese steel exports, Does not justify a reason for staying in the eu....

Far from it, it means getting rid of the incompetent and turncoat that camoron is to the UK, not that the opposition option is anything to be optimistic about ...

If we didn't give 11 billion pounds NET to the EU it could've went to subsidising the industry until it improved, and being out of the eu, we would'nt have to go begging to Brussels...

grannyboy - 01 Apr 2016 15:11 - 438 of 12628

And it all seems slightly strange that all of a sudden, they try to make out that the uk has some input on decision making, when on more then 70 occasions when the uk tried to object or support something they have lost on EVERY occasion..

Fred1new - 01 Apr 2016 15:42 - 439 of 12628

That 11billion seems to be covering all the cracks.

UK's input does seem suspicious!

I've got an idea , why don't they have a massive argument with the EU and threaten to leave , but that's too clever really to get something out of them .

jimmy b - 01 Apr 2016 15:54 - 442 of 12628

No VIC Cameron knows how to negotiate
,it's like this i come to you to buy a car for 10k ,i tell you i love it ,it's just what iv'e always wanted and that there is no way i'm leaving without the car but will you take 8 for it ? you obviously tell me no as you know i'm not leaving without it .

2517GEORGE - 01 Apr 2016 15:54 - 443 of 12628

The problem will be (if we vote to leave) on what terms. I would like to think that it will be someone other than Cameron doing the negotiations.

VICTIM - 01 Apr 2016 16:15 - 444 of 12628

Exactly jimmy he's started completely wrong , he should have said to them that he can't guarantee that we will vote to stay in and that we need reforms in order to satisfy the UK public . George Dave has said he will still be leader either way , but like you say someone other than him , even then you could see errors so to speak .

2517GEORGE - 01 Apr 2016 16:24 - 445 of 12628

VICTIM, I think someone like Michael Gove or Jacob Rees-Mogg were involved in the negotiation process. DC will not be PM from 2020 anyway, so to have him and the negotiating skills he has shown to date does not instill confidence. Besides by all accounts he has a vindictive nature and that wouldn't be good.

Yes George I've changed my perception of him greatly last few months .

Jacob at his best taking down Dimbleby 45 seconds.

Before the Scots had their independence referendum someone asked cameron if he would resign if the Scots voted for independence and he said he would'nt, but it was reported afterwards that an insider had said cameron would've resigned if they'd voted for independence.

He would resign if it was a vote to LEAVE(thankfully) and someone with more gumption and who believes in the country would fight harder for a GOOD deal..

Haystack - 01 Apr 2016 18:25 - 449 of 12628

I doubt that he will leave if the vote goes against him. I am happy with the job he did on negotiating better terms. There was no way he could get much, but at least he got a few things. It is pretty academic as we will vote to stay in.

My estimates have been good so far. I predicted on here that there would be a Conservative clear majority and UKIP would get just one MP.

Haystack - 01 Apr 2016 18:35 - 450 of 12628

Current odds

Stay 2/5
Leave 15/8

grannyboy - 01 Apr 2016 19:22 - 451 of 12628

Haystack, IF YOU really believe that cameron obtained the best REFORMS to the best of his ability then you truly are deluded...Or YOU were/are quite happy with being in that corrupt, undemocratic, unaccountable organisation whether there had been reform negotiations or not.

YOU need to google Cameron, Bloomberg speech to see what he should have got or even somewhere close. Instead of some watered down non descript concessions he trumpeted as a victory...LMAO!

As to him resigning yes i believe he will, no one would have confidence in HIM obtaining the best trade deals if the negotiations was left to him.

Well i certainly hope you are very much wrong(which i believe its your wistful thinking) in that the UK votes to remain because it'l mean total intergration and ever more closer union and more immigration......

But then again by the tone of your posts thats what you prefer anyway, I believe the opposite will happen, and that the LEAVE side will triumph..

Haystack - 01 Apr 2016 19:29 - 452 of 12628

Cameron was never going to get anything significant. The EU is too large to be modified much. I hope we leave, but I can't see it. The public will think it is safer to stay in,

MaxK - 01 Apr 2016 19:38 - 453 of 12628

The mid-east holiday season is getting into it's stride, that will really encourage people to vote in to the €uroloony bin.

April fools day, or are they mad/desperate to enough to try it?
