How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

For those interested in the tennis check out Blake v Nadal. Blake took the 1st set and Nadal has just levelled up. This could well be a good one to scalp on the Nadal side.

Thought Italy would have pulled it off, but still made a profit overall, so happy(ish)!

Just nipped in on Turkey vs Denmark, will now call it a day.

See theyve finally settled the highest temp market this morning :-)

compoundup - 04 Sep 2005 15:24 - 4416 of 10502

That delayed settlement irritated me and IMHO didn't do Betfair any favours.

For myself (and probably a few others who are equally daft) although I still had some funds on account I was not inclined to trade AT ALL when the majority of my account was tied up. Such was the free-money situation on this event that I had committed over 75% of my account.

To Mrs C's approval, I worked in the garden and earned some brownie points yesterday. Had my account been available to trade I'd probably have joined in the fun on the footie.

I did email Betfair asking why, when so far as I could see, the necessary information was in the public domain, they couldn't either settle the market or post a brief explanation on the forum BB. I got this reply:-
----------

Thank you for your e-mail.
I apologize for the delay when settling for, once the official result
has been verified we settle the market as soon as possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further
enquiries.

Kind regards

Can you spot the evidence that this is a standard response? They were not even bothered to make reference to which market was in question. Now I don't doubt that they get deluged with email but they could head a fair proportion of it off if they made pertinent postings on their own forum.

Rant over :-)

not involed in the icvcameroon game ,swings all the way anyone trading will be quids in

Scripophilist - 04 Sep 2005 19:58 - 4418 of 10502

I know I and several others pestered them to settle. It was very annoying but not entirely unexpected, as you say did themselves no favours. No trading today out in the garden giving it a long overdue makeover. Strange things going on in it, some shrubs have started to flower again!

Fundamentalist - 04 Sep 2005 20:28 - 4419 of 10502

Easy money from Brazil tonight - 2-0 up after 20 minutes

Fundamentalist - 04 Sep 2005 20:33 - 4420 of 10502

Make that 3-0 after 28 minutes - this lot are awesome and that is without Ronaldinho tonight

Fundamentalist - 04 Sep 2005 20:35 - 4421 of 10502

4-0 after 30 minutes - anyone who thinks England have a chance of winning the world cup - or anyone else for that matter - may need to think again

Scripophilist - 04 Sep 2005 21:01 - 4422 of 10502

I would normally switch to the other markets now, but the liquidity is poor. Have opened a small position on total goals and next goal market.

Dil - 04 Sep 2005 22:59 - 4423 of 10502

Out of interest does anyone know how far the odds on Wales fell yesterday before the goal ?

Haven't seen the goal but read on teletext it was a deflection ... lucky sods :-)

I backed Brazil just before they scored the second , had a cup of coffee and it was all over !

Dil - 04 Sep 2005 23:01 - 4424 of 10502

WOODIE ... I think attheraces is delayed by about 5 seconds plus the satellite time.

I don't follow the horses but on the occasions I have watched attheraces you could lose a fortune if you were betting in running believing it to be live.

WOODIE - 05 Sep 2005 07:00 - 4425 of 10502

dil thanks for info i will tread carfully when betting in running they should not be allowed to call it live!

Scripophilist - 05 Sep 2005 08:33 - 4426 of 10502

"Out of interest does anyone know how far the odds on Wales fell yesterday before the goal"

If you give me the starting odds I can work it out.

Typically the price on Wales would have been steady and England would have drifted as the draw came in during the first half. This would have changed slightly as the second half progressed.

Dil - 05 Sep 2005 11:45 - 4427 of 10502

Last odds I saw were 13.5 to back Wales about 3 hours before kick off.

Scripophilist - 05 Sep 2005 12:01 - 4428 of 10502

Difficult to estimate in arrears without the draw odds but I reckon the market would have been around these levels in the 54th minute.

11.87 Wales
2.17 The Draw
2.19 England

Scripophilist - 05 Sep 2005 16:01 - 4429 of 10502

Almost pulled off an amazing fluke this afternoon. Currently messing around with the new bookmaking feature on Bet Angel and messed things up good and proper (I guess that is what testing is for) had a largely red book other than an outsider which I had over 3k profit if it came in (Don't ask how I achieved that!). Anyhow race goes off and it makes a late charge to get beaten on near the line. So close to a remarkable profit. However I am not tempted to try again..

Ended up with a 3.71 loss but that was the second best scenario, all the others worse. Would have wet myself had that one come in.

WOODIE - 05 Sep 2005 16:30 - 4430 of 10502

scrip did you think at one stage you was going to win the pleasure must have been worth 3.71
