I'm running WIN 98 and received an MS Critical Update message yesterday. After downloading the update, IE 6 started to malfunction in that emails could not be stored and the error message was something like "Store file is damaged, run Scandisk" Well I defragged, ran IE Repair Tool, File Checker and Scandisk. No problems were indicated but on restart my machine defaulted to Safe Mode and I can't seem to get out of Safe Mode. Any suggestions please?

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 08:13 - 4425 of 11003

Emails now working OK - downloading and saving - but I'm still stuck in wretched Safe Mode.

F8 brings up the choice menu, No 1 Normal Start Up is highlighted but it opens up in Safe Mode??????????

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 08:28 - 4426 of 11003

Still in Safe Mode. Just found this message on my Desktop. Has this anything to do with it?

Just ran Registry Mechanic. Showed one problem on a deep can but then the application froze so I couldn't do anything about it.

Still marooned in Safe Mode. Help!

Spaceman - 13 Apr 2006 09:50 - 4428 of 11003

TOK, this is a difficult one to work out remotely hower I think you should do a virus scan. I suggest that you do an online virus scan Panda Activescan is fairly good

Panda Activescan

Post back here when complete !

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 10:04 - 4429 of 11003

Hi Spaceman - Did an AVG virus scan yesterday and it found SQL SSRP Slammer which it dealt with (although I suspect it had already been dealt with and was languishing in the AVG virus vault).

Just noticed that although the screen is in Safe Mode the corner Safe Mode captions are not been displayed.

Kayak - 13 Apr 2006 10:22 - 4430 of 11003

Then you're not in safe mode TOK, you just have the default display driver at low resolution. Go into System Devices and set the video card and monitors correctly.

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 10:47 - 4431 of 11003

Hi Kayak - Computer idiot here! Been to My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager which brings up a pretty picture of lots of monitor screens! No option to change any settings - and what are the correct settings anyway? Sorry to be such a thicko!

Spaceman - 13 Apr 2006 10:57 - 4432 of 11003

TOK. Right click on desktop select properties then settings and have a look at the resolution Display: statement, is the graphics card and monitor correct? YUou can change the resolution from there but if your display adapter has been corrupted you might need to do more.

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 11:29 - 4433 of 11003

Thicko TOK here again, guys. Display shows VX700 on ATI 3D Rage Pro (atir 3). 16 colours (option to change these) and screen area 640 x 480 pixels (option to change this setting too). Performancer shows Graphic Hardware Accelerator is set at Full (option to reduce). Any suggestions, please?

Mega Bucks - 13 Apr 2006 11:33 - 4434 of 11003

TOK,try setting True color(32bit) and 1024X768 !!!!

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 11:56 - 4435 of 11003

Hi MB - No option for 32 bit. I set 1024 x 768 and this moved the colour setting to 256. Rebooted as required but the settings defaulted back to 16 and 640 x 480.

Mega Bucks - 13 Apr 2006 11:58 - 4436 of 11003

TOK,did you save the setting ???

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 12:07 - 4437 of 11003

Hi MB - I clicked Apply and OK and the message came up to rebooot. Did I need to do anything else? Meanwhile, I've just tried High Colour (32 bit) but that has defaulted back to 16 bit.

Mega Bucks - 13 Apr 2006 12:10 - 4438 of 11003

I guess one of the other Pc boffins would be better on this one then, cue Spaceman Kayak :-)

Mega Bucks - 13 Apr 2006 12:16 - 4439 of 11003

Only another suggestion prehaps 32bit it to high, you could try 24 bit see if it will take that setting, that may be the maximum it will take !!!

Mega...

Kayak - 13 Apr 2006 13:02 - 4440 of 11003

TOK, do you know what resolution you were using before? Try 16 colours on 800x600. It should change it immediately. I'm assuming you've checked that you actually have a VX700 on an ATI 3D Rage Pro card :-)

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 13:21 - 4441 of 11003

Hi Kayak

Don't know previous settings. Settings shows VX and ATI and Belarc shows the same so I assume that's whatI've got.

Tried 800 x 600 which moved the 16 bit up to 256. Rebooted and back to 16 bit and 640 x 480 and this wishy washy monitor.

Noticed that on close down there are psychedlic strips of light that flash across the monitor briefly.

Mega Bucks - 13 Apr 2006 13:24 - 4442 of 11003

Dont worry about the monitors flashing strips of light, its just the good gear your smoking :-))

The Other Kevin - 13 Apr 2006 13:33 - 4443 of 11003

MB - I'll need some if I can't sort this soon.
