Most of the people heading for ISIS travel to Turkey which is a reasonable holiday destination. They then cross the border to Syria. Once there they disappear. To come back, they just reverse the route. The border between Turkey and Syria is over 800km and very leaky in terms of controls.

This is not a party political problem. Cuts or othwieare not important. It is the lack of evidence of the activities of the people involved.

Turkey requires a visa for starters, so i would not have thought it beyond the capabilities of computer-screening to pick out potential suspects - eg they're unlikely to white, or travelling with children and so and so forth

It is not sufficient evidence to arrest people just because they are visiting Turkey. Don't forget that Turkey issues the visas not the UK. There are other routes via Jordan. Some go to Pakistan and then fly to Turkey or Jordan. You can easily get to Turkey via Romania, Bulgaria or Greece and not need visas.

bet that if you hold a uk passport, you still need a visa to get into turkey from all of those countries

Those borders are easily crossed. I am sure that secure routes have been planned for some time. Don't forget that large numbers of Afghanistanies and other nationalities have easily crossed Europe to end up in Calais.

Sun-seekers heading to Turkey this year could be caught out by a new visa system which requires holidaymakers to apply for a visa before travel.

The popular beach holiday destination has always issued Britons with a visa stamp in their passports on arrival for a £10 fee, but will change the process from April 10, so that visitors will have to apply online for an electronic visa before travel.

The e-visa will cost the same amount as before, £10, and will be emailed to travellers for them to print out at home after providing their name, date and place of birth, email address and passport details. They will then be required to present the document to immigration on arrival.
