How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

It was a trader's meeting in Sunderland (in July) and Peter had a slot to talk about exchanges.

Afternoon All,

Steve, Nice lay at 1.5. Hope you bounce back in style from your disappointment.

Helen, Agree with Steve re mad odds I laid back at 1.6 having thrown huge amounts backing a draw at 2.5s on Thurs knowing that rain would arrive yesterday and today. Sweated out a few sessions as on the wrong side, hence the silence. Freddie/Strause, Langer/Hayden parnerships and rain rescued my position.

Currently sitting on massive green on draw line with no loss on others.

I personally think this will end up a draw with more rain expected to arrive later today and the pitch looking sterile.

Excellent opportunities to scalp on the Draw line when rain is threatening!

That's a relief, thought I was really losing my marbles for a moment!

Bak

cheers mate - backed back at 1.71 but raining again so may go back in if dips below 1.5 again.

Helen - 1.5 = 2/1 on in fractional

Is it me or is betfair running slow today?

DocProc - 10 Sep 2005 14:23 - 4558 of 10502

What's the difference between the Test match being a 'Draw' and it being 'Tied'?

kernow - 10 Sep 2005 14:47 - 4559 of 10502

Doc - A draw is a no result, a tie is scores level at close of play - I think

Same problem here. Lost my bet angel connection as well. Lucky its teatime at the oval ;~)

The difference between tie and draw in test cricket:

For it to be a tie the scores have to end level with the team batting 4th having been bowled out - has happened once i believe since test cricket started!!!

A draw is where there is not a conclusive result - ie the side batting 4th doesnt reach their target but arent bowled out (or it doenst even get as far as the 4th innings)

Is it just me or is betfair down?

kernow - 10 Sep 2005 15:13 - 4565 of 10502

...ah well - "Back to the Future" it is.

Dil - 10 Sep 2005 15:22 - 4566 of 10502

There are going to a lot of very p*ssed off punters if befair don't get the site up and running again very soon.

I was on the Norwich match and noticed it running slow but to crash on a Saturday afternoon defies belief.

Luckily I have no open bets.

If anyone's on the tennis there are unbelievable volumes on the Fed v Hewitt match.

If you're on Betangle, the graphs are picking people out there more than willing to lump on 50K+ on Fed at odds as low as 1.02!

Then again, Fed being 2-0 up in sets and 2-1 up in the 3rd set must be inspiring such people to have the confidence to do this type of backing.

bakko - 10 Sep 2005 23:07 - 4570 of 10502

These high roller backers must be having a few palpitations as its now 2-1 in sets to Fed with the odds at 1.10/1.11

Fundamentalist - 10 Sep 2005 23:34 - 4571 of 10502

Evening bak

watching the golf - let me know if it gos 2-2 ill turn over

but Agassi NEVER beats Federer

bakko - 10 Sep 2005 23:39 - 4572 of 10502

Hi Steve,

No need to turn over as Fed has just taken the match 3-1 in sets.
